Get Active is SAMH's ambitious programme to improve Scotland's mental health through participation in, and engagement with, physical activity and sport.
There is lots of evidence that participation in regular physical activity (including sport, exercise, active living and dance) is good for you in many ways. It can promote good mental health, prevent mental ill health and improve the quality of life of people who experience mental health problems.
The Get Active with Rangers Football Club Programme was set up to utilise the combined skills of both Rangers Football Club and SAMH to promote positive mental health through participation in and engagement with football. The courses are exclusively for SAMH service users.
The Get Active with Rangers Programme consists of 2x16 week programmes with each session lasting for 3 hours. The sessions included the following activities:
- Fitness Testing
- Football Coaching
- An SFA coaching qualification
- Tools for Living
Service Users participated in various programme activities with 100% of Service Users saying they enjoyed the Get Active with Rangers Football Club project.
83% said they felt the programme had helped improve their self esteem, make new friends and be able to deal positively with change.
67% of Service Users who attended the programme felt the project had improved their fitness levels and that the programme had improved their mental health.
