The manager confirmed that both Shiels and Lee Wallace returned to training today and provided neither suffers a reaction they will be considered for action against Falkirk tomorrow.
It would be a welcome return for Shiels who started the season in fine form before suffering the injury against East Stirlingshire 10 days ago.
And he is hopeful he'll pick up from where he left off after a strong start to his Rangers career.
He said: “I had a haematoma in the side of my thigh and that gave me a lot of discomfort and lot of bruising came out.
“It’s got to the stage where I’m jogging and able to bend it better so hopefully I’ll be involved again as soon as possible.
“Today was my first day back training and I felt quite good. I’m still aware it’s there but the signs are positive.
“It’s been stop start and at a time when you want to get some momentum and some rhythm and get your match fitness up.
“It’s been disappointing, especially with the team not winning, that you can’t do anything about that.
“But it’s only been two games that I’ve missed so hopefully I can carry that form on now.”
