The teenage winger suffered the problem against Queen’s Park on April 7 and was sent down to London yesterday to see a specialist.
It was thought that an operation may be necessary to cure the broken bone problem and that indeed was the prognosis so surgery was carried out immediately.
McCoist told RangersTV: “He had an operation on his foot last night which has gone well.
“Barrie travelled down yesterday and had surgery on the broken bone in his foot and we are satisfied that he can now have a good break and be ready for the start of next season.”
Fellow teenager Lewis Macleod is on the mend from a knee injury which has wrecked the second half of the campaign for the young midfielder and he could play before the season is over.
McCoist said: “Lewis is going to join us in training this week. He is a good bit off from playing in any part of a game but it is really encouraging.
“I would be delighted if he could get some action before the end of the season for his own confidence.
“I would far rather he had action rather than coming back for pre-season with maybe a little bit if uncertainty about going into a game.
“So in an ideal world we can get him some game time and he got off on his holidays and come back fresh and ready to go.”
Macleod is a key player for the Scotland under-19 side who are involved in the Elite State of the European Championships next month in a tough group with England and Belgium.
And McCoist will allow him to play – as long as he is fully fit. He said: “If Lewis is fine we won’t have a problem with him going away with the 19s but his fitness is the most important thing.”
The manager is also hopeful that Andy Little will be in a position to return to the squad this weekend, as the striker indicated earlier today on the official site.
McCoist said: “Andy won’t train in the early part of the week but I’m very hopeful we can get him involved in the latter part with a view to him being involved at the weekend.
“He is an important player for us. He and Lee McCulloch have more than contributed in terms of goals this season.”
