On this day in 1972, Rangers signed Tom Forsyth from Motherwell. You can read Tom’s Hall of Fame profile on the club website here.
It is the ultimate dream of any football player to score the winner in a cup final but to do it in an Old Firm game on the 100th anniversary of the tournament takes some beating.
Tom Forsyth is the man who lived that dream, famously scuffing the ball into the net from six inches with his studs to clinch victory in one of the greatest Hampden showpieces.
In 1986, Graeme Souness’ side took on Hibs in the league and won the match by three goals to nil thanks to strikes from Dave McPherson, Robert Fleck and substitute Dougie Bell.
The Rangers reserve side may have been defeated by Dumbarton recently, but it was a different story in 1941 when Bill Struth’s side were 7:0 winners at Ibrox in front of 8,000 fans.
George Thomson scored two penalties in the game, Torry Gillick bagged a brace and Jock Shaw, willie McIntosh and David Marshall also got on the scoresheet.
110 years ago in 1902 William Wilton’s Rangers took on Morton away from home and two goals from John McDonald and goals from RC Hamilton and Jacky Robertson wrapped up a 4:0 win.
