ON THIS DAY: Rangers shared their first league win with Dumbarton ON THIS DAY: Rangers shared their first league win with Dumbarton

WE look at some of the memorable moments that have happened on this day in the remarkable history of Rangers Football Club.

1891 - Rangers drew against Dumbarton in a League Championship playoff match, resulting in the only time ever that the Scottish League has been shared by two clubs.

At the end of the regular season, Rangers had played 18 games, winning 13, drawing three and losing just two. There had been crushing victories (8:2 and 7:3 over St Mirren and 6:2 over Cambuslang).

But one of their defeats had been against Celtic (2:1 away) and the other was at Dumbarton (5:1) with whom they shared top place with 29 points each.

The play-off took place at Cathkin and the match report of the game said that "the weather was all that could be desired, a gentle breeze tempering the sun’s rays."

Rangers surprised the Sons by scoring straight from kick off through Hislop and from then on the Light Blues were in control. Hislop had the ball in the net again only for it to be called offside, before McCreadie doubled the lead through a fantastic long shot.

The second half commenced and the Gers continued to dictate play, but allowed Dumbarton back into the game on the break after dominating the game for sixty minutes. The Sons then scored a second and the match and Championship were in the balance.

It was 2:2 as the final whistle went and the Championship was shared for the only time in its history.

1969 - There was a fire at Ibrox Stadium for the second time in seven months, which destroyed somthing in the region of 200-250 seats behind the directors box.

The fire occurred whilst Rangers were in Newcastle playing at St James' Park in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, losing 2:0 through goals from Scott and Sinclair.
