The U11 to U17 age groups play in the SFA Club Academy Scotland programme at ‘Elite’ level. The Club Academy Scotland programme is criteria driven and is based upon minimum required standards relating to a clubs philosophy, coaching qualifications, facilities, recruitment, sports science, medical provision and support structures.
Rangers Academy is one of only two in the country to have achieved 6 star status following independent audit by the SFA. Furthermore the Academy is also evaluated by the SFA for ‘Measurable Performance Outcomes’ and has proven to be one the most successful in the country based upon graduates playing for our 1st team, in professional football and at international level for their national teams.
These independently audited outcomes give Rangers Academy parents and players reassurance that they are in the best possible environment to maximise their chances of becoming a top player.
The Academy match programme involves a series of weekly fixtures against other professional clubs deemed to be at ‘Elite level’ throughout the country. The U11’s play 7-a-side football as do the U12’s in the first half of their season before moving to 11-a-side at Christmas. The U13’s play a modified game of 11-a-side with reduced sized pitches and goals while the U14’s to U17’s all play regulation 11-a-side.
All matches from the 11’s to 15’s are deemed to be ‘non-competitive’ with no scores recorded. At U17 level the teams began to compete competitively for the 1st time in season 2014/15.
The U8’s to U15’s are all schoolboy players, while the 17’s are a mixture of schoolboy and professional players. The U17’s compete in the Glasgow Cup and have won the competition in 4 of the last 7 years. The most recent victory was a 3-2 win in the 12/13 competition in front of a crowd of 8000 at Firhill.
The Development Squad compete in the SPFL Development League where teams can be made up of U20 players and 5 overage players. Last year’s Development Squad missed out on the League title by one point finishing in second place. Our 20’s team compete in the SFA Youth Cup where we have reached the final 5 times in the last 8 years. Our last victory was in season 2013/14 where our 20’s beat Hearts in the final.
