Jo Potter Encourages Squad To Grasp The Opportunity

JO POTTER says the squad are excited by the prospect of competing in Champions League qualifying this week.

The Light Blues will travel down south to take on Arsenal in their Round One clash on Wednesday evening with a potential final or third place play-off to come on Saturday.

Speaking to RangersTV to look ahead to the start of the European competition, she said: “As you can imagine it is one of the most prestige tournaments that there is.

“That is what everybody wants to play in, you always hear the question of World Cup or Champions League and it is a hard one so I think that just brings its own level of excitement.

“The opposition brings its own level of excitement as well.

“We know it is going to be a difficult task but it is also an exciting one.

“We need to make sure that we are prepared for it, but we also want to enjoy every moment too.

The former Lioness has acknowledged the huge task at hand of overcoming their English opposition but says her side will look to cause an upset on the night.

She continued: “I think we have pulled out the highest seeded team available in the draw so it is tough but that is what it is there for.

“There is a bit of pressure on them to get out of this stage because they didn't do it last year so they have got to make sure that they are doing their homework on us, particularly as we are the first team up.

“The whole emphasis will be on them [Arsenal] to beat us because that is probably what everybody expects so we have got to try and take a little bit of an advantage of that.

“We have had good conversations with the group and the players about how we are going to play, how we are going to set up, what that looks like and we are going to go down there and try to cause an upset.”

Potter has encouraged her players to ‘grasp the opportunity’ that awaits and feels those in her squad with experience on the international stage could be key to getting a result.

She added: “Players grasping the opportunity? They have to, you don't get another opportunity.

“If you go out at this stage you are done, it is a sink or swim stage for us.

“We want to make sure we are coming out of that on the right side of it not on the wrong side of it.

“We have got great characters in the group; we see our young players that have come through and just took each game in their stride and performed and exceeded all expectations.

“We have a really strong group that has been together for a good year now.

“We have not had many ins and outs; we have a little few along the way which has helped gel us a little bit more.

“Ultimately we have been back in our season for a few weeks now, we are not in pre-season so we have got to make sure that we use that to our advantage as well.
