150 YEARS OF RANGERS FOOTBALL CLUB

IN March 2022, Rangers Football Club will celebrate the monumental milestone of the club's 150th anniversary. 2021 will see the build-up to this special occasion begin, with that landmark being followed shortly afterwards by the 50th anniversary of our European Cup Winners’ Cup win celebrations in May 2022.

As Europe’s first major club to reach 150 years, Rangers are determined to celebrate the landmark to the maximum, with work already well-underway to make it a season and a year to remember for our fans all around the world.

Rangers have gone on to become one of the biggest names in world football with millions of passionate followers worldwide. Despite its global fanbase, the club’s roots in the local community remain as strong as ever.

The club was founded by four young lads – Moses McNeil, Peter McNeil, William McBeath and Peter Campbell - who had a dream to start a football team whilst walking through West End Park (now known as Kelvingrove Park) in March 1872.

The first match was a friendly held at Fleshers’ Haugh which became the club’s home for the first three years. The club has a deep history with Glasgow and has had many homes throughout the city before moving to the site of the current Ibrox Stadium in 1899.

Forever proud of our origins, it was important to launch a crest that upholds the Rangers values and details which are symbolic to the club. The ribbon which features below the crest design was influenced by the decorative crests from the club's earliest documented member books which feature an ornamental scroll ribbon. The ribbon design is synonymous with Ibrox where it features in the crests displayed on the side elevation of the iconic Bill Struth Main Stand.

In the summer of 2020, the club launched an evolution of our brand identity and unveiled an updated ‘Ready’ crest which displayed our core ‘READY’ message in a new, modern way. ‘Ready’ has always had significant meaning in the club’s history. For the anniversary, ‘Forever Ready’ will be the message that unites everything we do as a club to celebrate 150 incredible years – and fittingly, Rangers enter this milestone year as Champions of Scotland for a World Record 55th time.

The anniversary will form a year-long celebration of commemorative events, fan engagement, exciting activations, and the unveiling of Edmiston House - the club’s new, state-of-the-art, multi-purpose venue which includes event space, a Rangers museum and new Castore retail store.

Throughout the season, our kit and retail partner Castore will release commemorative kits that pay tribute to the rich heritage and success this club has been built on. These kit launches will be further complemented by special edition training wear, leisure wear and retro items for all ages.

MyGers members will be the first to experience the 150th anniversary identity with the new season 2021/22 welcome packs specifically designed to celebrate this moment with exclusive collectors’ items. MyGers members can also look forward to exclusive events and experiences plus unique opportunities to influence some of the anniversary planning and legacy projects.

Rangers Chairman, Douglas Park, commented: “Rangers are today delighted to unveil our 150th anniversary crest – the first major milestone as we count down to the celebrations of being the first major European club to reach such a landmark.

“Supporters are at the heart of everything we do at Rangers, and that will be no different as we mark our 150th year.

“The backing we have had from our Season Ticket holders, hospitality clients, and MyGers members since its launch last year has been phenomenal. It is just wonderful to see that loyalty rewarded this season with success on the park.”

James Bisgrove, Rangers’ Commercial & Marketing Director added: “Today marks the beginning of the build-up to our historic 150th-anniversary celebrations with a wide range of supporter-facing activities planned in the coming 12 months, culminating in the grand opening of new Edmiston House.

“Everyone at Rangers understands the significance of this landmark moment, as we become the first major European club to reach this special milestone.

“We are looking forward to unveiling a host of initiatives that will inspire Rangers supporters both in Scotland and across the globe to join the 150th-anniversary celebrations.’’
