A display etched into Rangers folklore, on a sunny May afternoon back in 2000, as the teams emerged at the National Stadium for the Scottish Cup Final, the Gers end erupted into a sea of orange.
Thousands of supporters raised coloured cards as one, creating the famous ‘Oranje Boom’. A powerful visual tribute to the Dutch influence that had been installed within the club.
Under the guidance of then Dutch manager Dick Advocaat, Rangers had embraced a new footballing identity. Powered by Dutch excellence, from the leadership on the touchline to the quality on the pitch with the likes of Arthur Numan to midfielder Giovanni Van Bronkhorst.
The Oranje Boom tifo captured that perfectly, celebrating a team that blended Rangers’ tradition with a bold European flavour.
Orange, the colour directly linked to Dutch football, filled the stadium, standing out brilliantly, and what was to follow on the pitch was equally as impressive.
Rangers delivered an outstanding performance, sweeping aside Aberdeen with a 4–0 victory to lift the Scottish Cup and complete a historic domestic treble. It was a display on the pitch of dominance, confidence, and attacking football, matching the perfect on-field counterpart to the sight in the stands prior to kick-off.
That iconic moment continues to inspire today, and it finds further links with the club’s Dutch-themed fourth kit, launched earlier this season. Drawing on the success of that day and era that brought Rangers success, the kit is a modern tribute to a time when the Gers dared to evolve while staying true to their identity.
The story of the Oranje Boom, the 2000 Scottish Cup Final, and the Dutch revolution is just one chapter in Rangers’ rich history, and it’s waiting to be explored by supporters in the club’s museum and famous home stadium, along with so much more.
On offer for supporters to see is a collection of items linking back to that famous Dutch Day. Loaned by the Young family, of father Harry and son Steven, we have a Dutch national team shirt from 2000 signed by our Dutch players of that era, whilst also having the edition of Rangers news and weekly of that seven-day build-up in anticipation of the final and the aftermath that followed.
A suggestion by Steven, we have a special letter written by club legend Sandy Jardine thanking him for his Dutch-themed idea 26 years ago, whilst there is also a t-shirt sent alongside the letter showing the club’s appreciation. The shirt depicts Bert van Lingen and Dick Advocaat and is signed by the first-team players from that game.
From iconic kits and silverware to displays that bring unforgettable moments back to the forefront of your memory. Whether you were there to experience it or have just recently discovered it, the spirit of that afternoon always remains, which you can come see for yourself within the official museum and stadium tour.
