Academy International Review

RANGERS Academy had a number of players proudly representing their nations on international duty.

Here’s a look at how each player fared over the last seven days.

Cole McKinnon – Scotland Under-21s

Scotland 4-1 Kazakhstan – Thursday, March 21 – Under-21 European Championships Qualifier

Cole was a second half substitute as Scotland stormed to a 4-1 triumph over Kazakhstan in European Championships qualifying.

The 21-year-old was joined on the pitch by Adam Devine, who was introduced in the second half, and Leon King who played the full 90 minutes.

It was a welcome boost for Scot Gemmill’s side’s hopes to securing qualification to the European Championships.

Bailey Rice and Leyton Grant – Scotland Under-19s

Scotland Under-19s 1-3 Italy Under-19s – Wednesday, March 20 – Under-19 European Championships Qualifier

Scotland Under-19s 2-3 Georgia Under-19s – Saturday, March 23 – Under-19 UEFA European Championships Qualifier

Czech Republic Under-19s 2-0 Scotland Under-19s – Tuesday, March 26 – Under-19 UEFA European Championships Qualifier

It was a disappointing international window for Scotland Under-19s as they missed out on qualification to the Under-19 European Championships.

However, there were appearances for both Leyton and Bailey, with the latter captaining the side, as they continue to gain valuable international experience.

Both will still be eligible for the next round of Under-19 fixtures given their 2006-born status and they will be keen to progress through the international youth ranks in their fledgling careers.

Josh Gentles – Wales Under-17s

Wales Under-17s 2-1 Romania Under-17s – Wednesday, March 20 – UEFA Euro Under-17 Qualifier

Wales Under-17s 1-2 Sweden Under-17s – Saturday, March 23 – UEFA Euro Under-17 Qualifier

Bulgaria Under-17s 1-2 Wales Under-17s – Tuesday, March 26 – UEFA Euro Under-17 Qualifier

Josh enjoyed a week to remember as Wales secured their place at the Under-17 European Championships.

The teenage forward has been no stranger to the back of the net for his country during the qualifying campaign, and he will now be eyeing a place in the final Wales squad for the European Championships in Cyprus this summer.

Blaine McClure, Callum Burnside – Northern Ireland Under-17s

Northern Ireland Under-17s 5-1 England Under-17s – Wednesday, March 20 – UEFA Euro Under-17 Qualifier

France Under-17s 5-2 Northern Ireland Under-17s – Saturday, March 23 – UEFA Euro Under-17 Qualifier

Northern Ireland Under-17s 3-1 Hungary Under-17s – Tuesday, March 26 – UEFA Euro Under-17 Qualifier

Blaine captained Northern Ireland, while Callum was on the scoresheet, as the Green and White Army narrowly missed out on qualification to the Under-17 European Championships.

Indeed, Blaine donned the armband in the matches against England and France, with his Gers Under-18s teammate netting in the defeat to England at St. George’s Park.

The duo will now return to Rangers as the Under-18s gear up for a crucial league fixture against Kilmarnock on Friday afternoon.
