HALL of Fame midfielder and former club captain, Barry Ferguson, will take charge of the Rangers Tennent’s Sixes side as manager, with the iconic event returning to the Braehead Arena on the weekend of October 3 and 4.
All 12 William Hill Premiership teams have signed up to take part in a legends version of the small-sided tournament, with heroes of the recent past wearing the official club kits of this season.
The original Tennent’s Sixes captured the imagination of a generation of Scottish football fans during its nine-year stretch from 1984 until 1993.
Partick Thistle were the last winners of the cult trophy and the joint organisers, the SPFL and Braehead Arena, have worked quietly for months to give fans of all ages a family experience blending nostalgia with a modern twist.
Saturday group stages will start with three regionalised groups of four, with each group winner and runner-up progressing to the knockout stages, along with the two best third-placed teams.
To keep fans on the edge of their seats, every game will have a winner with a bonus point for a penalty shootout win in the event of a draw.
The sin bin will also be making a comeback, and organisers hope it will capture the imagination of football fans and families alike.
Ferguson won five league titles, five Scottish Cups and five League Cups across two decorated spells at Ibrox and was appointed club captain at the age of just 22.
Under the tutelage of Alex McLeish, the midfielder led Rangers to an iconic treble in the 2002/03 campaign.
His contributions from the middle of the park saw Ferguson scoop the Scottish Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year and Scottish PFA Players' Player of the Year prizes.
Returning to the club in 2005, Ferguson helped the Gers to the UEFA Cup final three years and was also instrumental in a first league success for the club in four years in 2008/09.
He later returned to manage the club on an interim basis in February 2025, leading Rangers to a UEFA Europa League quarter-final after victory over Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahçe.
