Brianna Westrup Expecting A Tough Test

BRIANNA WESTRUP is expecting another tough test on Sunday as Rangers host Motherwell in the SWPL.

The ex-Newcastle United captain has slotted comfortably into the back four since joining in October - playing every minute so far this season.

Born in California to a Scottish mother, Brianna feels she has always played a European style of football which has helped her settle in at Rangers.

Speaking to RangersTV ahead of the game, she said: “I have loved it so far. The girls are great, the staff are great and the facilities are quality. I have really been enjoying myself over here.

“I always felt growing up that I played more of a Scottish style, at least a European style, in the sense of being possession oriented.

“My mum is from Scotland so I feel it is a bit of an easier transition because I wouldn't say I am a typical direct, very physical, very fast American player so I have found it fairly easy to settle in.

“Week in week out we face different opposition in terms of how they are going to set up against us. Some weeks we might have a team flying at us, pressing really high and other weeks we might have a team sitting in a bit more and looking to counter so I think in general it is a really good learning experience for all the players.”

Despite a strong start to the season, the Gers centre-back feels there is plenty more to come from the squad.

She continued: “When you are winning games it is always a good thing within the team for morale.

“I would say our team is still trying to find their rhythm in a sense, it has been great we have been grinding out results but it is exciting that it feels like there's more to come. It is very positive but we are trying to work and work to break through that little bit more.

“I feel I am able to develop within the team and also individually, there are certain things in my game I know I want to work on and the staff are very willing to help with that and to help you improve.

Training through the international break, Brianna feels it was important for the squad to keep their fitness levels high.

She continued: “We are fortunate enough we have quite a few girls that get called into the different squads so that is wonderful for our team.

“There's always a bit more running during the international break but it is important that we keep our fitness up.

“It is a good environment and we try to stay positive and take care of the things while our teammates are away so that when they come back we are that much more prepared for the weekend coming.

“From what I have been hearing Motherwell are quite a physical team and they will probably look to put us under pressure a bit there.

“Our main focus has been on us and what we need to do to adapt to that. Each team will throw something different at us so the emphasis needs to be on us and what we need to do to be successful and then we can make small adjustments during the game.”
