Fraser Delighted With Scotland Call-Up

ROBBIE FRASER says he is targeting further involvement for Scotland Under-21s after celebrating his first competitive call-up for his country in the most recent international break.

The 20-year-old full-back was a late inclusion to the squad as Scot Gemmill’s side continued their Under-21 European Championships qualifying campaign with a trip to face Hungary earlier this month.

Fraser was given the nod from the off despite only partaking in a couple of training sessions, but his defensive resilience helped the young Scots to a creditable clean sheet.

Speaking to the official Rangers website, he reflected on the experience: “We were scheduled to have a few days off, but I was awoken on Saturday with a phone call asking if I would like to accept a call-up to the Scotland Under-21s squad.

“I was buzzing on the phone, and I just wanted to get off the call and tell my mum and dad. They rushed home from being out shopping and they were delighted for me.

“It’s my second Scotland Under-21s call-up, but it was my first competitive call-up as my previous one was for a friendly.

“We defended well in the context of the game, and it was one of those matches where we had to dig deep. It was a great point for us to take overall.

“I don’t like to expect things and I genuinely didn’t know. I like to earn it and I felt that I done really well in training during the couple of days prior to the game.

“You never expect that you’ll start, but when I saw the team before the game I was buzzing.

“It’s a target for me now [to be included in the squad in March]. I have a good few months to really kick on.

“It’s never my decision as to who will be involved in the squad, but I can do my job and control what I do on the pitch.”

Fraser will quickly shift his attentions back to domestic matters as Rangers B continue their exploits in the Glasgow Cup with the visit of Partick Thistle on Tuesday evening.

The young Gers were successful in their previous outing in the competition last month in a 4-0 success over Queen’s Park, and the 20-year-old says the squad are hungry to continue their pursuit of silverware this term.

He added: “The message before every game [is a complete 90 minute performance]. It perhaps never happened against Queen’s Park, but we’ll be working on it in training, and the coaches will be drilling it into us, to try and get that perfect start. Hopefully that arrives.

“Trophies is what the club is built on, whether it’s the first-team or B Team.

“We need to focus on ourselves. We’ll go about our business the same way as every other game, but we also can’t underestimate any team.

“Thistle are a really good footballing side and they have some good players. They will pose threats, but we still have to focus on ourselves and do our business.”
