Getting To Know: Calliste Brookshire

IN the latest episode of our Getting to Know series, new women’s signing Calliste Brookshire sat down to answer some questions on her footballing journey and interests away from the game.

The Greece international spoke of her early days playing back home, football in Iceland, players she looks up to and much more.

Here’s what she had to say:

What is your earliest football memory?

Probably playing town soccer, just with girls I grew up with and I am still friends with today. I was about five years old, dribbling around the field, and that is my earliest memory.

What made you get into football, and what was the moment that made you feel like you could do this for a career?

I would say in high school is when I really started to focus on football. Playing club and also on my high school team, I just really started to enjoy it and knew that it was a path that I wanted to follow, and hopefully playing college one day and see where that took me.

What was the name of your first club?

FCUSA.

You mainly play as a winger. Have you always played there, or have you played any other positions in the past?

I usually play as a winger but sometimes as a wing-back.

Who was your football hero growing up, and why?

I loved Rose Lavelle; she plays for the USA. She is just a crafty midfielder, left-footed, and I love watching her; she is really an inspiration.

What was the first football game that you remember attending?

A New England Revolution game, they are the MLS team in Boston. Just growing up, going to a few of those when we were kids.

What was the biggest difference you noticed playing football in Iceland compared to the USA?

Playing football in Europe is a lot more tactical, a lot more thinking before playing, and that really helped grow my game a lot.

You will wear number 24. Is there a particular reason why you wear that number?

Not really, in college, it was the number available, so I kind of just stuck with it throughout my few years there, and it has just been available ever since, so I am just sticking with it.

What has been the best moment of your career so far?

I think going abroad was a big moment for me. I knew that I wanted to keep playing in whatever way it was. Going to Iceland, I knew it was going to be hard, but I think it really pushed me to be a better player, and I have got some opportunities from that. Getting called in with Greece and then eventually coming here. It all just circles back to me taking that jump to go play away from home.

What is your go-to pre-match meal?

Usually, some chicken and rice with vegetables, keeping it simple but effective.

What is your favourite cheat meal?

I love Thai food, Pad Thai or a ramen bowl, something like that.

Do you enjoy playing or watching any other sports?

I watch the Bruins hockey, and I also watch American football.

What American football team do you follow?

The New England Patriots.

What is your favourite holiday destination?

Greece.

What is currently your favourite TV show or your favourite of all time?

My favourite of all time is One Tree Hill.

What is your favourite band or artist?

I really like SZA and Noah Kahan; those are probably up there.

Who would you say is the best player in the world in your position and why?

I would say I watch Alyssa Thompson; she plays for Chelsea. She is a winger; she is younger than me, but is super good at what she does, so I look up to her a lot.

What football boots do you wear?

Nike.

How would you describe yourself in three words?

I would say passionate, caring and just kind of easy-going.

What is the best part of your game?

Trying to be brave in the attack, even if I am not sure I will win a duel, and just go into it hoping that I will and telling myself I will, so we can go for it and hopefully score goals.
