Gio: Team Showed Character and Belief

GIOVANNI van Bronckhorst believes that his Rangers side showed great ‘character and belief’ this evening in their Champions League clash against Liverpool.

The Light Blues travelled to Anfield to take on Jurgen Klopp’s side in their next group stage fixture of their European campaign, and the Dutchman expressed his thoughts on his team’s away performance after the match.

Speaking to RangersTV following the 90 minutes, he said: "It was a very challenging game against a good opponent, it’s a hard place to travel to. In the fist half we were 1-0 down but still in the game at half time, Allan [McGregor] had some excellent saves and I think that we were much better in the second half at identifying the moments to press up higher.

"We won the ball a couple of times in transitional moments; we kept looking for a goal which we had two big chances to score with the ball being cleared from the line – we were unlucky not to score.

"Overall, we showed the character and belief to keep going, we were very strong especially Leon King to perform on the highest level - 18 years old from the academy, I think that he should be proud of his performance.

"In the back, we had a lot of solid moments against a fast-attacking Liverpool, to concede a goal from a penalty and a free-kick is always harsh when we defended really well.

"The improvement that we’ve had in the Champions League game by game is there but today it wasn’t enough to get something out of the game."

The Gers boss gave his thoughts on Leon King’s individual performance after naming him in his starting eleven this evening and insisted that the squad can take key moments from tonight to utilise against St Mirren on Saturday.

He added: "It was very good; he faced some good strikers with speed and creativity. He did very well and I’m really happy with his performance, I think his development is really good – this is why we give him the chance to play, we have a lot of confidence in him, and his performance today was very well.

"We should take the positives out of the game and take that with us to the league on Saturday in a home game. We have to keep to pushing ourselves to get the three points every time that we play in the league and that starts on Saturday."
