Gio: The Players Have The Chance To Be In The History Books

GIOVANNI van Bronckhorst believes his players have the chance to write their names in the history books as they take on Eintracht Frankfurt in the UEFA Europa League final this week.

In the 50th anniversary year of Rangers’ incredible European Cup Winners’ Cup victory in 1972, van Bronckhorst says his squad can take inspiration from that cup winning side.

Speaking to the media ahead of Wednesday’s final, the Gers boss said: “ I love having people like John Greig around because he is a true legend. I think it is very important for the players to hear those stories and about the experience they had and what it meant for them. It is very important because this club is all about history.

“I also told my players we have two big finals and of course the final in Seville will give them the chance to be in the history books of this club and really get an historic win. Then the stories they will tell in years to come will be the same stories that the players from 1972 tell to my players.”

The boss says Rangers will play to their strengths as they prepare to face the Bundesliga side in Seville. He continued: “I've said it before you have to dream of something to really achieve it. You can work hard and really give everything to achieve your goal and that is beautiful.

“It is the whole process to eventually lift the trophy and we are well on our way but you can only win this cup if you win the final and that is all that matters at the moment.

“It is a final and you always have to find the right balance in your approach but I want my team to enjoy this game and play to their strengths and that is what we are going to do.

“The game against Dortmund at home was a good example where we had to change our system in the game and that brought us the win. We are going to prepare them well for Frankfurt and we should play the way we always do with the flexibility to change if necessary and to react if Frankfurt do things differently so it will be a very high level game.”
