Girls Academy Manager Kevin Murphy on Continuing to Evolve the Online Programme

GIRLS Academy Manager Kevin Murphy says they are continuing to evolve the online programme to ensure they cater for all of the players as best as possible.

With almost a year of online learning, Murphy feels the variety has been important to keep the youngsters engaged with the programme.

Speaking to RangersTV to discuss the ongoing work at the Academy, he said: “We have split it up into various different parts and we do a mix of educational workshops.

“We have set up different challenges as well to try and appeal to their competitive nature.

“We have got three teams that have been made up of all the girls within the Academy so they compete in challenges to get points for their team. We are just trying to think of innovative ways to keep the girls engaged and keep them motivated and also to continue to learn.

“They have been unfortunately used to Zoom for a long time now so the challenge for us is how do we keep them motivated and keep them engaged and I think we have been great at making sure that we are innovative.

“We sent out a player survey as well recently to get feedback so that they can lead some of the content rather than myself or others trying to imagine what they want to learn.

“Probably something that separates us from the Boys Academy is that there are particular female traits within football development that we need to touch upon so it has given us a bit more time.

“We had Clare Gemmell on speaking about body development and her experiences growing up as a footballer and some of the challenges and I think that was really beneficial for the players.”

Murphy has been impressed with the way the young players have responded to the challenges brought up by lockdown.

He continued: “It has been really tough for everyone, I think it is really important that they continue to set goals and look at areas they can improve on in their own time.

“It is important they know that this is temporary, it won't be here forever and it will pass.

“They never cease to amaze me in terms of their dedication and commitment to what they are trying to achieve coupled with also trying to do home schooling as well which will be new to them.

“Hopefully when we come out of this and we start to go back to training they will be more resilient and they'll appreciate football a lot more.”

Off the pitch, the players have been supported by the Player Care Team to help them with any issues.

Murphy said: “Most Tuesday evenings have been dedicated to an education element whether that be on change and loss or keeping motivated so it is really trying to equip the players with tools that not only help them in football but also in their own personal lives.

“The player care team has been fantastic, they are always on hand to reach out to players at any given point if they want that support or need that support.

“We have given them the tools to equip themselves so that if there are any challenges then hopefully through the player care team and the staff, the players will feel better prepared to deal with the challenge.”
