Helander: I’m Ready

FILIP Helander says he is ready to step up whenever Steven Gerrard calls on him after making his Rangers debut.

The centre-back, scored the Gers second of a comfortable 3-0 Betfred Cup win over East Fife, but joked that he wasn’t sure it would stand as his first goal with the home side’s Ross Dunlop getting the final touch.

Helander arrived from Italian side Bologna last month behind the rest of the squad in his pre-season preparations due to a different schedule.

But the now fit 26-year-old has struggled to break into the starting XI with Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic in formidable form.

Speaking to RangersTV after the cup win, he smiled: “I don’t know if it was my goal but it was nice to get 90 minutes. It was hard conditions but we got the job done.

“It’s felt really good to be here at Rangers, from the welcome to all the help that I have got here from the staff and everybody around the club. The fans have been nice to me as well so everything feels good.”

Rangers now move into a packed fixture list before the international break, culminating in the first Old Firm of the season at Ibrox on September 1 and the Swedish international is hoping to get more minutes.
