James Tavernier Lost For Words At Monumental Season

CAPTAIN James Tavernier was lost for words as he described the ‘monumental’ season which saw Rangers crowned Champions today for the 55th time in the club’s history.

The skipper has been pivotal in Rangers journey back to the top and knows just how much it means to the club and fans to clinch the title.

Speaking to RangersTV this afternoon, he said: “There are no words that can describe it, I am absolutely delighted for the club, the fans, the players and everyone that has been involved.

“Especially the fans, they've been in the dumps for a long time and I've experienced such a rollercoaster since I first came here.

“To do it this year is monumental, not just to the boys that have contributed but for the fans because they have been with us since day one.

“This is a terrific day for the club and I hope everyone enjoys it and soaks it in.

“Since the gaffer came in we have been working really hard to get a balance of where we want to be and this season we wanted consistency and we have shown it.

“We have been absolutely terrific, anyone who has come into the team and stepped into a position has done a fantastic job for the club and I am just so proud of them all.”

Now in his sixth season with Gers, Tavernier has experienced the highs and the lows at Ibrox and admitted he’s still taking it all in as he prepares to lift the Scottish Premiership trophy at the end of the season.

He added: “I am still absorbing it, through all the criticism I recieved and the comments from pundits, I had people who stuck by me and my family and it has really helped me push through and I know where this club needs to be.

“When I first came here I wanted to put the club back where it belongs, it has obviously taken longer than expected but you couldn't ask for a better season from the boys.

“We have finally brought 55 back home to the club and it's such an amazing feeling and I'm sure the fans at home are absolutely loving it.”

With the Europa League round of 16 coming up for Gers, Tavernier says the squad will not take their foot off the gas.

He continued: “We have got to soak up today and really enjoy this moment but we have got really important games coming up.

“We have got to try and get into the next round in the Europa League and we have got the possibility of doing that if we apply ourselves right which we know we can.

“We want to keep strong in the league, we are not going to take our foot off the gas because we have won it. We want to finish this season strong and really put a marker down.”

After a superb campaign so far, Gers’ win over St Mirren yesterday put them on the verge of glory, with results elsewhere today meaning they can mathematically no longer be caught with incredibly six matches still to play.

It’s title number 55 for the club – the most of any football club in the world – and the first in 10 years following one of the most arduous decades in the club’s history.

There is little doubt today’s success can be put down to the unbelievable loyalty of the Rangers support – you stood by this club in its hour of need, and you deserve this success as much as every member of Steven Gerrard’s players and backroom staff, Ross Wilson, Douglas Park and the club’s board.

They have been simply outstanding this season, and are still unbeaten and have a Last 16 UEFA Europa League tie with Slavia Prague to look forward to on Thursday night.

With 32 matches played, Gers have accumulated 88 points through 28 wins and four draws. 77 goals have been scored, and, unbelievably at this stage of the season, just nine have been conceded.
