KRIS Boyd says he is delighted to mark a ‘special occasion’ for Rangers as generations come together to celebrate the Weekend of Legends II match at Ibrox on Sunday afternoon.
The former Light Blues forward, who netted over a century of goals for the club in a trophy-laden period in Govan, will be part of a star-studded Rangers Legends side that will square off against a World Legends XI which includes Robin van Persie, Robbie Fowler, Emmanuel Petit, and many more.
Speaking to RangersTV ahead of the Weekend of Legends II, Boyd believes it is a fantastic event which brings the Rangers family together: “It’s a special occasion for the football club and for the older generation as such. It sounds strange counting myself in the older generation but it just shows you how quickly it turns around! I am delighted to be involved.
“It does bring back memory in terms of you playing, but last year, trust me, it didn't! There hadn't been much training being done leading up to it and I am probably going to have to do a bit more this year that is for sure. Ibrox is a special place, to walk out the tunnel again and pull on that Rangers jersey is fantastic, you still get a buzz out of it right now, and to be a part of something that is special for the football club because generations come together. When you look at some of the older ones from the Dick Advocaat era, and then Alex McLeish at the start, then Walter Smith's group as well, it’s everyone coming together and it’s special to be part of it.”
Boyd was involved in the inaugural Weekend of Legends match at Ibrox last season, and he insists that the success of the event twelve months ago meant there were no second thoughts when he was approached to play in this year’s edition.
He continued: “It was fantastic, but Shota [Arveladze] won't be invited back this year because he stole the goal off the top of my head! I think again to mark the 150th year of the football club was special last year, and I think it’s the start of something that could become special for the club in terms of there is always players leaving and you want to bring them back.
“It is obviously different opposition this year but there is no doubt I am sure the Premier League guys will be coming up here to show how good they were over their period of playing as well. It’s one thing we have a laugh and a joke about it, but as soon as you go on that pitch it is competitive, there is an edge to it, you want to win, you don't want to embarrass yourself in front of the thousands of fans that will come and watch.
"It’s special for families to come and watch the older ones playing. We may not be as quick as we used to be - I am not putting myself in that bracket right enough as I am just as quick as I have always been! - but it is fantastic to be a part of it, and to play with some real legends of the football club.”
