Liam Ross: Players Showing Real Progress and Belief

UNDER-19s assistant coach, Liam Ross, praised the contribution of the younger Under-17s players who made the step up a level in last night's league victory over Dundee United.

The young Gers started the contest with three players under the age of 16, with one of those, Kyle Glasgow, opening the scoring in the first half.

Ruaridh Hall, another 2010-born player, then sprung from the substitutes bench in the second half to mark his first Under-19s appearance with the goal which sealed all three points.

Speaking to RangersTV after the triumph, Ross commented: "It was a tough game in the end. We started well but probably lost control in certain moments.

"The most pleasing part was finishing the game with seven or eight Under-17s players on the pitch, and I thought their contribution was a real positive.

"The obvious [step up] is physically. I would also say that you have to think quicker, move the ball quicker, and we were probably guilty of finding success in moments by doing certain things in the first half and then in the second half coming away from that.

"A real learning moment for them has got to be an understanding of what is getting them success in the game and trying to do it on a more consistent basis throughout the full duration of the game.

"Ruaridh's contribution was really good. I go back to how hard he worked off the ball first and foremost - so many times he recovered possession in Dundee United's half.

"And when he has the ball he shows he has real quality and technique. He's in the right place at the right moment for his goal.

"It's what I love about them: every single player, be it in training or in games, comes up with that mindset. If they maintain that then they can go and do really well here."

Rangers controlled the opening 45 minutes but allowed Dundee United to build momentum in the early stages of the second half.

Indeed, goalkeeper Greig Thackray had to be alert to repel the Tayside outfit on one occasion, before the visitors were reduced to ten men with 20 minutes to play and Hall's 86th minute strike eased any lingering unease.

Ross added on the performance: "What was most pleasing? The energy and aggression, and it's those habits that we speak about all the time that we expect every game.

"We're creating a lot of opportunities right now by playing that way.

"Some of the rotations on the side between the No.8, No.6 and the full-backs caused Dundee United a lot of problems.

"The first goal comes from that, and it's a pleasing aspect because it's something we work a lot on.

"Dundee United were quite aggressive in their approach, which is brilliant for our young centre-backs to deal with.

"They probably struggled in certain moments in the first half, but that's part of their learning and if you look at how we finished the game we were really strong in those duels.

"I'm really happy that we've won the game, but most importantly I feel the players have actually learned something and they're coming off the pitch as better players."
