Malky Intrigued By Challenge

MALKY Thomson said the intrigue of a new challenge attracted him to becoming Joint Head Coach of Rangers Women ahead of an exciting 2020 season.

The 51-year-old hopes he can bring his coaching experience to the women’s side, having worked in the English Premier League with Birmingham City and in Asia.

Speaking to RangersTV, he said: “I think first and foremost I have really enjoyed my time at Rangers I have had various jobs at the club working with kids all the way from 10 years of age through to reserve level.

“I think I have gained a lot of experience working not just at Rangers but being at other clubs and working in the English Premier League and working in Asia and it has equipped me to become a better coach.

“Rangers have been great in my development helping me go through the badges and have given me the chance to take different age groups so for me I am just excited by the new challenge.”

Malky said talking to Women’s and Girls’ Football Manager Amy MacDonald inspired him to be a part of an exciting time in the women’s game.

He explained:

“When I started coaching it was about giving the guys a chance to kick a ball and about their dreams and their hopes and I know how fulfilling that is when they do eventually get to the top.

“There was no difference in that to the girls but that inspired me that she was not only wanting to work for Rangers but that vision really captivated me and it is something I really bought into.”

In the dugout Malky has joined Gregory Vignal, and said the transition has been smooth having previously worked together.

He added:

“We know each other and we know how each other work so it has been quite a smooth transition to go and work with him.”
