Malky Thomson: Squad Have Created History

MALKY THOMSON has lauded his Rangers squad for creating history at the club after they were crowned Sky Sports Cup winners with a 2-0 victory over Hibernian at Tynecastle Stadium.

Goals from Lizzie Arnot and Kirsty Howat etched the Light Blues into the competition’s history, with the match broadcast live on Sky Sports and played in front of a buoyant crowd in Edinburgh.

Speaking to RangersTV after the triumph, Thomson praised the squad effort from his players: “It was great to make a bit of history, to be part of such a willing group that have got there just now is great.

“I think you can see that, when we have the environment and facilities, a big grass pitch, we want to play football. We want to grow the women’s game and put it on the stage. It was great that Sky Sports covered it and hopefully we’ve given a good account of ourselves and shown a good product on the pitch.

“Lizzie Arnot’s goal was a fantastic goal and Kirsty Howat coming off the bench. It’s great because, to win a game it takes a team, but to win a cup, it takes an absolute squad to do that. That’s what we’ve shown today.

“To play and win a cup, it’s special, but to do it at Glasgow Rangers with the enormity of it, the pressure and the expectation levels. We knew early that when we played in the Champions League, we had something special about this group.”

The Gers support was a symphony of noise inside Tynecastle as they drove the team forwards towards victory, with Thomson paying special praise to the collective effort from the playing staff, backroom team and the loyal supporters.

He continued: “It was really pleasing. I found out last night that they [the fans] were going to turn up in their numbers. The noise was great and it definitely helps us. Rangers is about singing, chanting and cheering on your team and definitely our girls responded to that.

“The staff that we have, everything around us. We have a great guy in Craig McPherson who is there on everyone’s case every day bringing us all back down to earth. The goalkeeping coach, Nic Hardie, and the list could go on with the operations team behind us. There’s an army of people who made this happen and allow the players to go out and perform in that fashion.”
