Malky Thomson: The Squad Have a Good Base to Work From

RANGERS Women’s manager Malky Thomson believes the squad have a good base to work from as they returned to training in preparation for the start of the SWPL season next month.

The boss praised the programmes provided to the players during lockdown, which allowed them to return in good shape.

Speaking to RangersTV, he said: “It has been overwhelming. The period of lockdown that we had with the girls definitely created a bit of anxiety, so the relief of getting back into the training centre was great.

“We are back in now and we are managing to get one session per day in the training ground and then we are trusting the girls to go back and do their gym work etc at home.

“There has been a real dedication to the programmes sent out by all the staff.

“At Rangers we have a mental health nurse, we have sports science and a technical group as well who have all had an input into maximising the girls’ ability to train at home so they came back in a really good state.

“We tested for two days and got some good results back and that has given us a good base to work from.”

Thomson and his assistant Kevin Murphy have now been carefully planning sessions to make good use of the limited time the squad have together.

He added: “The girls are a tight-knit group so they have to be mindful of social distancing coming to training but it is more about having the time together.

“We only have one session so we have got to maximise that couple of hours slot we have at the training ground just now and trust the girls that they are doing their programmes to make sure they have the strength and physical aspects of playing football.”
