Match Report: Rangers B 2 -0 Queen's Park

RANGERS B Team head to the semi final of the Glasgow Cup after defeating Queen’s Park 2-0 at the Rangers Training Centre.

A double from Tony Weston in the second half saw the Light Blues positively progress to the next stage of the tournament.

The young Gers once again aimed to start with the intent to take the game to Queen’s Park, as they maintained most of the possession in the opening stages of the cup tie.

However, it was Queen’s Park with the first real opportunity on goal on 7 minutes. A powerful strike was sent towards the back of the Light Blues net, but Jay Hogarth made a critical save to keep the score level with the ball being deflected onto the crossbar.

McCallum’s side looked to fight back quickly with Alex Lowry and Robbie Fraser linking up well to cut a dangerous ball into the box to meet Cedric Itten at the back post, but his volley was saved by the keeper.

This seemed to motivate the home side further as they looked hungry to break the deadlock. Charlie McCann found a small pocket of space to thread a superb ball to an advancing Itten, but his strike was headed clear. McCann recycled the ball and sent an effort towards the goal, but like Itten, his strike was cleared.

Scott Williamson had a great opportunity to put his side in the lead 40 minutes after picking the ball up within his own half. He managed to push forward and get his shot away, but Hogarth made an excellent effort to get an arm to it and deny the opportunity.

The Gers continued to push their way into Queen’s Park’s box, but the visitors worked well to intercept any danger created by the Light Blues.

Scott Williamson sent another dangerous effort from the back post inside the Gers box, but his effort was just narrow of the goal.

Just before the end of the first half, Potter’s side were awarded a penalty after Jai Quitongo was brought down in the box by Greig Allen. Roman Darcy sent his strike towards the bottom left corner, but Hogarth made a crucial save to deny the visitors the lead before Allen cleared the deflected danger.

Rangers looked to push on in the second half as they continued to pressurise the Queen’s Park final third to gain the lead.

Halftime substitute Adam Devine and Lowry were first to threaten the Queen’s Park goal with some lovely build-up play down the left-hand side. Lowry switched the ball back to the defender who was pushing towards the back post, he struck the ball first time sending a ferocious shot towards the goal, but it was just wide of the post.

Jake Davidson was able to advance from the halfway line into the Gers penalty area, before cutting the ball to Darcy in front of the goal but he sent his effort wide of the goal.

The Gers were on the counterattack following this as Cole McKinnon burst down the right side, he struck the ball with power towards the goal, but the keeper managed to save the youngster’s effort.

Substitute Tony Weston replaced Cedric Itten on 61 minutes, and the youngster didn’t waste any time on making an impact.

Arron Lyall played in McKinnon on the right before he smashed the ball off the keeper’s hands and into the path of the waiting Weston who deftly slotted the ball home for his first of the game.

A few minutes later, the Light Blues were awarded a free-kick a few yards from the edge of the box after McCann was brought down. The resultant Lowry delivery struck the wall, but the deflection fell to Weston at the back post who calmly slotted it away to double the lead for his side.

Ross McCausland looked to add to the score line after he bombed down the right-wing, he sent a dangerous strike to the goal, but it was just wide of the back post.
