Match Report: Rangers into Fourth Round of Scottish Women's Cup

RANGERS progressed to the fourth round of the Scottish Women’s Cup this afternoon with a 14-1 victory over Stenhousemuir.

It was an impressive performance from the Light Blues in their first match of 2022 as they faced the Championship South side at Ochilview.

Rangers lined-up with Jenna Fife in goal and a back four of Chelsea Cornet, Janni Arnth, Brianna Westrup and Demi Vance.

Tessel Middag was joined in midfield by Lizzie Arnot and youngster Emma Watson, with Jane Ross supported up front by Kayla McCoy and 16-year-old Jodi McLeary.

It was a fantastic start for Rangers as a first minute corner was swung into the box by 15-year-old Emma Watson curled in at the near post after a slight deflection off the Stenhousemuir goalkeeper.

The Light Blues were awarded a penalty with three minutes on the clock as Chelsea Cornet was taken down in the box. Lizzie Arnot stepped up to the spot and calmly slotted beyond the keeper to make it 2-0.

It was a relentless start from Rangers and they almost had a third inside the opening five minutes as Jodi Mcleary dragged a shot just wide before Demi Vance had a low effort blocked by the keeper.

Emma Watson was denied a second as the keeper touched wide a lovely curling effort, before Kayla McCoy came close with a header from a Chelsea Cornet delivery.

It was 3-0 to Malky Thomson’s side in the 12th minute as McCoy was again causing problems for the hosts. This time she cut in from the left to deliver a ball across the face of goal which Jane Ross was on hand to tap home.

It was a fantastic start to this cup tie for the Light Blues who looked dangerous in every attack. Jodi McLeary delivered a lovely ball into the box which Lizzie Arnot diverted into the back of the net but the linesman had his flag up for offside to deny Rangers a fourth.

However, the Gers didn’t have to wait long for that fourth goal as it came just minutes later. Emma Watson showed strength to beat a Stenhousemuir player before driving to the byline and picking out Kayla McCoy who turned the ball beyond goalkeeper Claire Stirling.

With 22 minutes on the clock, Rangers made it 5-0 as the Academy duo combined well. Emma Watson again found space to drive down the right-hand wing and picked out Jodi McLeary who struck a powerful shot beyond Stirling.

Stirling pulled off a good save to deny Kayla McCoy from distance, before getting a strong hand on the resulting corner to clear the danger momentarily for the hosts.

It was 6-0 before the half hour mark as Demi Vance picked out Jane Ross and she tapped home her second of the afternoon.

Before the break, Vance saw a shot tipped over the bar by Stirling before Tessel Middag’s header bounced back off the post from the resulting corner.

The Light Blues had the seventh in the 40th minute as Lizzie Arnot’s ball across the face of goal evaded goalkeeper Claire Stirling to meet the waiting Kayla McCoy who scored her second of the afternoon.

Just on the stroke of half-time, Scotland international Jane Ross completed her hat-trick with a lovely finish across goal and into the back of the net.

Malky Thomson made two changes to his side at half-time as he introduced two further Rangers Academy players.

Kirsty Maclean came on in place of Lizzie Arnot, while Hannah Robinson was handed her senior debut as she replaced captain Brianna Westrup.

Into the second-half Rangers added a ninth goal in the 50th minute as Chelsea Cornet delivered a dangerous ball into the box which was turned into her own net by Stenhousemuir defender Jude Connolly.

Janni Arnth was next to come close for Gers as her header from an Emma Watson corner bounced back off the post.

Rangers hit double figures with 55 minutes on the clock, Watson cut the ball back to Tessel Middag and the midfielder guided a shot into the back of the net.

Stenhousemuir got a goal back on the hour mark as Eva Ralston picked up on the break of a loose ball to fire into the back of the net.

Malky Thomson made further changes to his side meaning Rangers featured seven youngsters in the final 20 minutes at Ochilview.

Eilidh Austin, Hannah Jordan and Kayla Jardine joined Robinson in also making their competitive first team debuts.

Kayla Jardine marked hers in style by getting on the scoresheet in the 75th minute, the midfielder put pressure on the goalkeeper to win the ball inside the box and showed composure to curl home and make it 11-1 to the Gers.

With 10 minutes remaining, Hannah Jordan also netted on her competitive debut for the club with a brilliant finish lifting the ball beyond Claire Stirling.

Jane Ross, who captained Rangers in the second-half, scored her fourth of the afternoon and Rangers 13th as she used her pace to beat the offside trap to go one on one through on goal to slot into the bottom corner.

Into the final five minute of the game another of Rangers' debutants got on the scoresheet as Hannah Robinson picked up the ball outside the area and curled a fantastic strike into the top corner of the net.

With a mix of experience and youth on the pitch today it was a fantastic squad performance as Rangers progressed to the next round of the Scottish Women’s Cup.
