Match Report: Rossvale 0-13 Rangers

RANGERS progressed to the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup with a 13-0 victory over Rossvale this afternoon.

It was a relentless display from the Light Blues with nine different goalscorers at Petershill as they booked their place in tomorrow’s draw.

Malky Thomson named six changes from Thursday evening’s impressive 4-0 SWPL victory over Hibernian with Lizzie Arnot, Kirsty Maclean, Colette Cavanagh, Jenny Danielsson, Jodi McLeary and Kayla McCoy all coming into the starting line-up.

Chelsea Corent, Sam Kerr, Brogan Hay, Megan Bell and Kirsty Howat were on the bench, with captain Kathryn Hill not in the matchday squad.

Rangers lined-up at Petershill with Jenna Fife in goal and a back four of Nicola Docherty, Hannah Davison, Tessel Middag and Rachel McLauchlan in front of her.

Kirsty Maclean sat just behind a four of Lizzie Arnot, Colette Cavanagh, Jenny Danielsson and Jodi McLeary, while Kayla McCoy has been tasked with leading the line for Rangers this afternoon.

16-year-old goalkeeper Lucy Inman was on the bench for this cup tie and was joined there by Brogan Hay, Chelsea Cornet, Sam Kerr, Kirsty Howat, Megan Bell, Jenna Ferguson, Maddie Nolf and Emma Watson.

It was a fantastic start for Rangers at Petershill as they found the breakthrough with just five minutes on the clock. Rachel McLauchlan lifted a ball forward in search of Lizzie Arnot who had timed a perfect run into the box as she slotted low beyond goalkeeper Rachel Docherty.

Shortly after, Rangers had the ball in the net again as a short corner was swung into the box by Nicola Docherty but Tessel Middag was flagged offside as she headed into the back of the net.

However, it wasn’t long until the advantage was doubled as Arnot’s powerful shot was pushed away by Docherty but the rebound fell to Jodi McLeary who found the back of the net with just over 10 minutes on the clock.

It was three for Rangers midway through the first-half and it was a fantastic strike from Kirsty Maclean. The 17-year-old found space around 25 yards out and released a superb right-footed shot from distance which nestled into the top corner of the net.

The Light Blues were in the mood for goals this afternoon and were 4-0 ahead in the 22nd minute. Lizzie Arnot and Nicola Docherty linked-up well down the left before the latter picked out Jenny Danielsson in the box and the Finland international was able to touch it beyond the goalkeeper from close range.

Rangers were in control against the Championship side and continued to add to the scoring inside the opening 30 minutes. A series of passes saw Gers carve space in the Rossvale backline with Colette Cavanagh drilling a powerful shot into the back of the net.

This time linking-up down the right, the Gers added a sixth goal 10 minutes before half-time. Rachel McLauchlan and Kayla McCoy combined well with McLauchlan cutting a ball back from the byline into the path of Danielsson who fired home at the back post for her second goal of the afternoon.

Thomson made three changes to his side at the break as Jenna Ferguson, Maddie Nolf and Kirsty Howat were introduced in place of Hannah Davison, Rachel McLauchlan and Kayla McCoy.

Howat, who scored a double against Hibs on Thursday evening, was denied early in the second-half by Rachel Docherty as she looked to continue her goalscoring form.

However, it wasn’t long until the striker managed to find the net as just six minutes into the second-half a ball from the right found Howat in space in the box. She took a touch before finishing low beyond Docherty to increase Rangers’ advantage to 7 goals.

Jodi McLeary was denied by the woodwork a few minutes later as she got on the end of a Nicola Docherty cross.

Tessel Middag was next to get on the scoresheet and it was an incredible free-kick from the midfielder. Rangers were awarded the set-piece around 30-yards from goal and Middag set her sights on the target as she lifted a fantastic right-footed free-kick over the wall and into the back of the net.

Thomson made two further changes with half an hour of the game remaining as Chelsea Cornet and Megan Bell were introduced in place of Jenny Danielsson and Nicola Docherty.

Shortly after Lizzie Arnot got her second of the afternoon as she was next to try a superb effort from distance which found the top corner.

Maddie Nolf became the eighth goalscorer of the match on her return from injury as she picked up the ball in the box after a cross from Colette Cavanagh and showed her composure to fire beyond Docherty.

Lizzie Arnot had her hat-trick in the 67th minute as she was picked out by Megan Bell and the Scotland international fired low into the back of the net. A few minutes later, Chelsea Cornet drove forward from midfield to get on the ball and managed to control it before hitting a shot beyond Rachel Docherty to make it 12-0.

With a couple of minutes remaining, Gers added another goal as Rachel Docherty got a touch on a Lizzie Arnot shot which bounced towards goal with Maddie Nolf able to tap over the line to round off the scoring for the afternoon.

Rangers will find out their quarter-final opponents tomorrow evening with the draw taking place at Hampden at 5.30pm.
