McCallum Hopes Opportunities Continue

DAVID McCallum says opportunities will continue to arise for Rangers’ youngsters after an especially youthful U19s side defeated SSC Napoli in the UEFA Youth League earlier this week.

16-year-old Zak Lovelace started and impressed in the Young Gers’ 3-2 victory over the Italian outfit, before being replaced by another 2006-born attacker in Archie Stevens. 15-year-old Bailey Rice also played the final ten minutes as the Light Blues protected their lead to claim all three points.

Speaking to RangersTV, McCallum said: "We want to continue to push young talent. It’s about having that potential and getting them into moments when they’re ready.

"If you look at the impact Zak Lovelace had in his duration on the pitch – he was more than comfortable and really effective at this level. You look at Bailey Rice coming on as a 15-year-old and I was really pleased for him to do that. Archie Stevens also got a good portion of the game.

"There are lads that are champing at the bit to get opportunities and hopefully these doors will continue to open for them."

Rangers will be keen to build on their victory over Napoli when they visit Liverpool in their next UEFA Youth League outing after the international break.

McCallum continued: "I’m looking forward to all the games. Liverpool is obviously close to home and there’s not far to travel for that one.

"They’re a good team, as you have seen from their win over Ajax. Obviously they played Napoli last week and we’ve watched that game as well.

"We’re looking forward to it."
