Mia McAulay Highlights Strong Squad Competition

MIA MCAULAY highlighted the competition for places that continues to see Rangers take positive strides in their season.

The winger was back in the lineup and on the scoresheet in the team’s 2-0 home win over Montrose this afternoon in SPWPL action.

Speaking to RangersTV after the game on what’s been crucial to the team’s form as they ready themselves for the league split after the break, she said: “It’s always good going into the training and knowing there is not one person in the team that is going to be in that starting XI.

“It is always good to have that competitive edge with your teammates; it makes you better and it is just going to make the team better in the end.

“The split is always great; you're playing the top-six in the league.

“It is always great because you are going into the next day at training knowing that you are playing a tough game after and after, it will be good.”

The youngster reflected on the 90 minutes in Cumbernauld, admitting the team weren’t on their A-game but was glad to get over the line with another win.

She continued: “I don't think that we were at our best in the first half, I don't think the conditions helped but at the end of the day we can't let our standards drop, but I think we have come into the second half, we have got another goal, 2-0, three points and up the road.

“It is massive going into the split now.

“Montrose are very physical. We know what they are like, we need to break them down and we need to move.

“I don't think the conditions helped but we have got the three points and that is all that matters.

“Half time message? It was just to play short passes. I think we were forcing it too much especially in these conditions.

“It was windy out there; everything was skidding about. If you tried to play a long pass it would bounce off your feet.

“It was just to play short and we have went out in the second half and we have done that.”

The 19-year-old talked through her goal which turned out to be the crucial opener before Laura Berry sealed the deal with the second, as she now prepares to link up with her nation in Scotland’s World Cup qualifying double header against Luxembourg to come.

She added: “I think it is has come from their attacking free kick. We have just broke on the counter, I have just sprinted up the pitch.

“May [Cruft] has got the ball and she's played a good pass into me and I've just hit it first time and it has went in so I am happy.

“Scotland? I am really looking forward to it. It's another week of learning for me especially being young and I am going away and playing with such great players

“Obviously it’s the qualifiers so we need to go out and win.”
