Munn: Preparation Was Key

MASON MUNN says preparation was key as the Rangers goalkeeper made two vital stops in the penalty shootout to help his side seal their place in the Scottish Youth Cup final.

The 17-year-old answered the call as his pair of saves gave the Gers a 3-1 buffer in the shootout before Findlay Curtis stroked home the decisive penalty.

And the teenager says his interventions were the result of diligent note taking prior to the game.

Speaking to RangersTV after the victory, Munn said: "Myself and Conor Brennan, the goalkeeping coach, sat down yesterday and looked at some penalties that they've had this season.

"It did help in the game because the boy who hit first actually went a different way three times before now. It was good that I guessed right.

"You need to prepare at everything because it's not just a 90-minute game in the cup. You need to be ready if it does go to penalties.

"It's such a good feeling [to win]. Obviously missing out last year, it's such a relief to get to the final once again and have the opportunity to play in a historic stadium.

"A lot of people will say penalties are a lottery, but I disagree. I done my research and we came out on top."

The young Gers were indebted to a Chris Eadie spot-kick as the 16-year-old restored parity moments into the second period.

Munn says the side were inspired by Steven Smith's half-time team talk, emerging with a renewed purpose in the second period that put Dundee United on the back foot.

The goalkeeper says he's now relishing next month's cup final, although he insists there is still a lot of developing to do in the interim.

He added: "I can't wait. Obviously it's a while away, so it's back to B Team football for myself and to keep doing what I've been doing.

"I thought in the first half we were a bit slow and sluggish. It took us a while to grow into the game, although there was probably a bit of nerves as we're still a young team.

"But I thought in the second half we came out and we were much better. Stevie spoke to us, we played so much better, and we probably deserved to wrap up the game in 90 minutes.

"He was just telling us to relax, and that it's just another game. He was encouraging us to continue playing football and do what we're good at, because there were times we played some excellent stuff when we got it down and played.

"I thought we done that more in the second half."
