Nicola Docherty: Maintaining Our High Standards

NICOLA DOCHERTY is hoping to use her experience to maintain high standards and help guide the young players in the squad after being named Rangers captain for the season.

The defender will take on the armband for the campaign having spent time as vice-captain over the previous two seasons after joining the Gers for a second time in 2020.

Speaking to RangersTV ahead of the sides first home league fixture of the season this Sunday the captain hopes to use her leadership skills to drive the standards in the team.

She said: “There are so many young players within the team and I'd like to think that I can bring my experience that I have had throughout the years. I'd like to bring that side of it and of course I like to demand high standards within the team.

“A lot of people say that I tend to be quite moany but it is something that I like to add and bring to the dressing room is just that competitive edge and hopefully it will set us up in good stead going forward.”

The 30-year-old is looking forward to playing back at Broadwood for the first time in the league this season as the Light Blues take on Aberdeen with both sides picking up victories on the opening day.

She continued: “We are looking forward to it, it is obviously a great stadium in terms of when we get the amount of fans that we get coming to the games so hopefully as many turn up as possible to support the team this season.

“We are just delighted to get the league going again, I feel like it has been such a long break so to finally say that we have started the season now and have our first home league game, we are really excited about it.

“There is obviously different challenges with whoever you are playing against but Aberdeen they have got a new manager now and they have obviously got their season off with maximum points as well.

"They will be coming in to make it hard for us but it is something that we need to do is working on how we are patient, moving the ball and making sure that we are patient in front of goal and also clinical.

“We know that they are probably going to sit in and make it stuffy for us but we just need to find a way to break that down.”

The Scotland international has been operating as a centre-back in a new system under Jo Potter so far this season and Docherty is happy in her new role and how it will benefit the team moving forward this campaign.

She added: “I really enjoy it, I think in football formation changes all the time, it is important that we can adapt in game situations depending on who we are playing against, so far so good with the new formation.

"We have had a lot of time during pre-season to work on the small details of it as well so it is just about making sure we get everything right coming into Sunday.”
