Rangers B 0:0 Queen's Park

RANGERS B Team drew 0-0 with Queen’s Park in the Glasgow Cup this afternoon.

It was the first competitive game for the young Gers as the 2019/20 competition resumed at Rangers Training Centre.

It was the youngest Gers side to ever line-up in the Glasgow Cup with a number of B team players on loan or part of the first-team bubble.

Queen’s Park provided early pressure through Jai Quitongo as he battled down the left wing against Adam Devine to cut into the box and get a shot away but it was into the side netting.

Nicky Hogarth was called into action on the 18th minute as Calum Biggar curled a free kick towards goal but the Rangers goalkeeper got his hand to it to tip it over the bar.

From the resulting corner Queen’s Park thought they had broken the deadlock as the ball fell to Stuart Morrison in the box as he got a touch to divert into the back of the net but the linesman had his flag up for offside.

In another set piece for the visitors Canice Carroll headed over after getting on the end of a free-kick.

Dapo Mebude had a chance for Rangers around the half-hour mark as he found space on the edge of the box but his shot drifted just over the bar.

Early in the second half Ross McCausland drilled a right-footed effort towards goal but it was held comfortably by Queen’s Park goalkeeper Cammy Bell.

Queen’s Park had a dangerous free-kick on the right hand side of the box on the 51st minute which was swung in by Michael McGlinchey. It met the head of Jai Quitongo but his header was just wide.

Ben Williamson picked out Kyle McClelland at the far post with a free-kick for Rangers shortly after but the centre-half couldn’t keep his effort down as it drifted over the bar.

Queen’s Park were continuing to pressure the young Rangers side as Ross MacLean’s shot was headed off the line by Adam Devine, before Canice Carroll had a shot just over the bar from a corner.

Kevin Thomson and Brian Gilmour made two changes on the hour mark as Cole McKinnon and Zac Butterworth were replaced by Robbie Fraser and Alex Lowry.

A great double save from Cammy Bell and the woodwork denied Rangers an opener on the 66th minute as Ross McCausland controlled the ball well from a Nicky Hogarth kick to race towards goal.

McCausland’s effort was blocked by Bell before the rebound fell to Nathan Young-Coombes which the former Rangers stopper also somehow got his body in front of. Chris McKee was quick to react to the rebound and sent a curling effort towards goal which bounced off the post.

With 10 minutes of the game remaining Queen’s Park came close as Quitongo drove to the byline before cutting the ball back to the trailist but it was blocked well by Nicky Hogarth.

Cammy Bell was called into action again as Rangers searched for a winner. Ben Williamson played the ball through to Dapo Mebude who turned well to fire a shot at goal but Bell got his fingers to it to touch it over the bar.
