Rangers Outline Plans For New Edmiston House Museum

2022 will see Rangers Football Club become the first major European club to reach its 150th anniversary.

It will be a truly incredible occasion for everyone connected to the club, with a wide range of events planned throughout the year to mark it.

The centrepiece of the celebrations will be the opening of New Edmiston House, a fabulous new facility for Rangers supporters, and contained within the new structure will be a club museum which will tell the story of our great football club.

The task of putting that quite unbelievable tale together has been an unenviable one, painstakingly pieced together by a working group made up of club representatives and industry professionals.

The museum will be split into a series of different themes, each with cabinets and cases packed with artefacts from our history and each with interpretation - but the entire project is so much more than just that.

It truly will be a state of the art addition not only to Rangers, but to Glasgow – putting the club in context within Govan, the wider city, Scotland and the world, and demonstrate how the growth of the club has gone hand in hand with the growth of the city.

There will be many digital engagement and video screens for a range of different audiences from the most ardent Rangers fan to football fans in general and to tourists from across the globe. It will also cater to the local community for education purposes and community engagement.

The whole museum project is designed to properly preserve, catalogue and enrich the proud history of Rangers Football Club, with that work already having been underway for almost three years.

Back then, the club employed a Collections Assistant who has since come through a degree in Museum Studies, and his role has seen him uncover many fabulous items which will go on display when the new museum opens next year.

But while the museum will regardless be packed with countless mementos of the club’s glorious past, we don’t quite have everything, and this is your chance to help!

We are looking for some rather specific items, namely:

  • Rangers match-worn/player issue shirts from throughout our history. 1970s and before are especially sought after. Also, from domestic, and European finals, league wins, legendary players and famous games.

  • Material related to our formation, early years, and the start of the organised Scottish League.

  • Material related to our previous grounds.

  • Material related to our first treble in 1949 and war era items (shirts, tickets, match balls, fan material).

  • Material related to the great 1950s and 1960s team, including the 1964 treble winners (shirts, tickets, match balls, fan material).

  • European Cup Winners Cup 1972 (shirts, tickets, match balls, fan material)

  • Jock Wallace-related material and the 1976 and 1978 trebles. (shirts, tickets, match balls, fan material).

  • 9 In A Row material (shirts, tickets, match balls, fan material).

  • Ibrox events material, gigs, boxing, Ibrox Sports, investitures, royal visits etc.

If you have anything on that list you think may be worthy of inclusion in the museum, we would love to hear from you!

The current Covid situation means we cannot accept any items in-person under any circumstances. Instead, please email [email protected] with, where possible, a picture of your item and a description.

If it is something which may be of interest to our collection, a member of our team will be in touch with further details.

Supporters will be at the heart of our 150th anniversary celebrations, and this is a superb opportunity for you to become involved!

The last few weeks have also seen our Edmiston House Supporters’ Packages launched, and they offer a host of fantastic benefits, not least the chance to be among the first to visit the new museum when it opens next year.
