Report: Dumbarton 1-0 Rangers

A SECOND half strike condemned Rangers Under-19s to a narrow 1-0 defeat in KDM Evolution Trophy League Phase action against League Two outfit Dumbarton at The Marbill Coaches Stadium.

It was a harsh result for the young Gers who defended resiliently in the opening period and looked the likelier side to score after the restart.

The scrappy nature of the Dumbarton winning goal, nodded home by Kristian Webster, underlined the fine margins as Rangers now shift their attention towards their final outing in the competition away to Hamilton Academical next month.

Stevie Smith was forced to make six changes to his side owing to the international involvement of several regulars, handing starts to the 15-year-old duo of Ashton Scally and Kyle Glasgow.

The side boasted four players in the starting lineup currently out on loan who remain eligible to represent the club in this competition, with forward Chris Eadie leading the line after a positive start to life at Stirling Albion.

It was a packed stadium for both sides’ penultimate league phase match in the competition, although action was few and far between in the opening exchanges.

Indeed, the young Gers looked compact defensively and boasted the first opportunity on the quarter of an hour mark when Max Cameron shot off target after Scally collected a delivery at the far post and laid the ball into the winger.

Glasgow certainly looked up for the occasion on the opposite flank and the youngster’s fleet of foot prompted the first caution of the afternoon shortly after when Alistair Roy scythed him down in midfield.

Dumbarton carved out their first dangerous moment of the contest when Webster, once of the Rangers Academy, released Gordon Walker down the right-hand side and his low delivery was swept goalwards by Dominic Docherty who was denied by the feet of Rydnn McGuire.

The hosts began to ratchet up the intensity in the minutes that followed, blasting over through Anthony Wallace before Ryan Blair stabbed an effort goalbound from the edge of the penalty area which McGuire watched trickle onto the post.

The surface at Dumbarton could be described as sticky underfoot, which is certainly not conducive to the free-flowing football on display in the side’s previous league outing against Kilmarnock last midweek.

Rangers were keen to exploit the speed of Cameron in the forward line, dropping Eadie deep to collect the ball before springing the 16-year-old in-behind. The linesman’s flag was raised against the teenager on 35 minutes, but it was a warning sign for the home side.

Scott Tomlinson sprung the offside trap down the opposite end moments later, but after a moment of hesitation McGuire leapt off his goalline to smother the winger’s toe-poked effort.

Aiden McCallion was next to test his luck for the visitors, stepping up for a free-kick 25 yards out after Eadie was fouled to curl his effort just over the crossbar.

The second half began with the two sides trading opportunities; Tomlinson shimmying inside and shooting straight down the throat of McGuire before McCallion and Glasgow traded passes from a short corner and the midfielder lifted a cross just ahead of Jack Wyllie at the far post.

However, the home side struck the opener just seven minutes into the second period. After Connor Campbell done well to turn the ball away for a corner from a delivery, a corner sailed into the Gers penalty area where the ball ricocheted around and Webster nodded goalwards and beyond McCallion positioned on the goalline.

It was harsh considering the visitors’ intent after the restart, with Aiden Crilly seeking an immediate riposte but curling an effort which Ollie Ecrepont was down smartly to deny.

Sweeping play down the right created a half-chance for Eadie inside the penalty area from a Wyllie low centre, but Blair was positioned smartly to block the forward’s first-time effort.

Smith rung the changes with 25 minutes remaining as Zebedee Lawson and Alexander Smith entered the fray.

The momentum was all with Rangers, but piercing a consistent hole through this resolute Dumbarton outfit was proving difficult.

Chris Johnston lifted an effort over the top down the opposite end as Lawson showed his quick feet to no avail down the right-hand side in search of a leveller.

The ball was begging to be struck with ten minutes remaining as Wyllie impressively weaved his way to the byline, but Cormac Christie couldn’t quite stride onto it as Dumbarton hacked to safety.

The final act in the contest saw Eadie latch onto a pass down the left-hand side, but he could only watch his cross-cum-shot drift onto the top of the crossbar as the home side clung on for all three points.
