Report: Relentless Rangers Defeat Queen’s Park

A RELENTLESS display from Rangers saw them pick up three points in the SWPL Cup group stage with an 8-0 win over Queen’s Park.

Jane Ross and Sam Kerr both netted first-half doubles with Lizzie Arnot and Rachel McLauchlan making it 6-0 at the break. Brogan Hay added to the scoring in the second-half, before Ross got her hat-trick in an impressive Rangers display.

Summer signing Jane Ross made her competitive debut for the club, while fellow new additions Tessel Middag and Kayla McCoy both made their debuts from the bench.

Rangers lined-up with Jenna Fife in goal and a back four of Nicola Docherty, Brianna Westrup, Chantelle Swaby and Rachel McLauchlan.

Chelsea Cornet, Kirsten Reilly and Sam Kerr are in midfield, with Brogan Hay and Lizzie Arnot supporting Jane Ross up front.

Gers came close to opening the scoring inside the first five minutes as good build-up play saw Lizzie Arnot and Chelsea Cornet work a one-two with Arnot picking out Jane Ross in the box but her header was just wide of the target.

The early pressure paid off as the Light Blues did get that breakthrough just a few minutes later.  Rachel McLauchlan drove down the right to deliver an inviting cross into the box which met Sam Kerr at the back post and she tapped the ball beyond the Queen’s Park goalkeeper.

Malky Thomson’s side capitalised on their strong start to the match as they added a second goal in the 10th minute. Ross was quick to react to win the ball back at the byline and picked out Rachel McLauchlan and she fired home.

Rangers were relentless in their attack and made it 3-0 in the 17th minute. Jane Ross made a strong run through on goal and showed composure to take a touch before slotting a low shot beyond the Queen’s Park goalkeeper.

Ross headed wide shortly after, before Chelsea Cornet saw a powerful strike blocked by the goalkeeper.

The fourth goal came 10 minutes before the break as Sam Kerr’s shot from the edge of the box bounced beyond the keeper.

Jane Ross made it five as two goals in the space of a minute continued Rangers’ pressure as she also drilled a shot beyond the keeper from distance.

The Rangers fans, who were back at the Training Centre for the first time since the pandemic,  certainly weren’t short of goalmouth action as Malky Thomson’s side netted their third goal in three minutes to make it 6-0 before the break.

Sam Kerr cut the ball back to Chelsea Cornet on the edge of the box, Cornet took a touch to set-up Lizzie Arnot and the Scotland international fired beyond the Queen’s Park goalkeeper.

Malky Thomson made three changes to his side at the break as goalkeeper Megan Cunningham replaced Jenna Fife, while new signings Tessel Middag and Kayla McCoy replaced Kirsten Reilly and Lizzie Arnot.

There was a warm reception for Demi Vance as she replaced Nicola Docherty with 30 minutes of the game remaining. It was Vance’s first minutes since returning from ACL surgery after suffering the injury while on international duty with Northern Ireland in November 2020.

Rangers continued to pressure Queen’s Park and Brogan Hay got on the scoresheet as she turned and fired a powerful shot into the back of the net to make it 7-0.

With 20 minutes of the game remaining Rangers added goal number eight. Tessel Middag played a cross ball to pick out Sam Kerr, who took a touch before finding Jane Ross in the box who tapped home for her hat-trick.
