Report: Spartans 0-3 Rangers

PATIENCE was a virtue for Rangers this afternoon as Jo Potter’s side continued their winning start to 2025 with a 3-0 victory over Spartans.

All three goals arrived in a free-flowing second half for the Light Blues – earned by a brace from Katie Wilkinson and a late strike from Jane Ross – as they took full advantage of Spartans being reduced to ten players on the stroke of the half-time interval.

The Gers lined up with one change to the team from last weekend’s Old Firm, with Laura Rafferty replacing captain Nicola Docherty in the backline.

Donned in all blue, Rangers began the brighter of the two sides on what was a crisp Sunday afternoon in the capital following the disruption caused by Storm Eowyn just 48 hours earlier.

Brogan Hay was a particularly lively spark for the visitors on the right-hand side, weaving her magic inside six minutes when she pulled the ball back for Liv McLoughlin to centre, but the midfielder’s resulting cross arrived at Rio Hardy with too much venom for the forward to steer towards goal.

Hardy was among the action again just ten minutes later when another dangerous Hay delivery was headed only as far as the Englishwoman, although she was unable to steer her first-time finish on target.

A crucial intervention from Emma Thomson in the Spartans goal then denied Rangers what looked a certain opener when Laura Rafferty strode onto a floated cross from Hay and volleyed menacing straight at the home side’s goalkeeper.

The territory certainly belonged to the Light Blues but the breakthrough was yet to arrive, even after Mia McAulay worked a half yard of space on the edge of the penalty area and struck a low shot just inches wide.

Indeed, the game pivoted just five minutes prior to the interval when Spartans forward Katie Fraser was shown a straight red card for a high boot to the face of Rafferty.

The summer arrival from Southampton was unable to continue as she was replaced by Docherty, with the onus now on the Gers to capitalise on their player advantage.

Rangers couldn’t quite believe their misfortune in additional time of the first-half when Leah Eddie, an unfamiliar goalscorer, rattled the upright from distance before Thomson sprung quickly to deny Hardy on the follow-up.

If a goal was to arrive then it would be appear that Hay would be the likely source, with the winger drilling a wicked delivery across the face of goal shortly after the interval that a combination of Katie Wilkinson and McLoughlin were unable to fire towards goal.

The numerical inferiority didn’t dim Spartans’ enthusiasm by an stretch as they continued to throw their bodies in front of everyone that Rangers had to offer.

Kirsty Howat was introduced as the Light Blues sought an opening goal and the substitute almost made an immediate impact when she was teed up inside the penalty area, but the forward dragged her finish wide of the target.

And Rangers’ persistence paid off just beyond the hour-mark through a familiar source.

It was a smart run beyond the Spartans backline from midfield by Chelsea Cornet which unlocked the move, allowing the 26-year-old to clip a delightful cross across the face of goal where Wilkinson stole a march on her marker to nod home.

There was a sense of relief from the visitors and they almost doubled their advantage 90 seconds later when McAulay connected with a volley and stung the palms of Thomson.

The comfort blanket for the Light Blues arrived six minutes after the opener when Camille Lafaix picked out Lizzie Arnot at the far post and the winger laid the ball back for Wilkinson to guide an effort towards goal which deflected into the bottom corner.

There was still time, too, for Rangers to add a third goal of the contest when Jane Ross rifled home at the far post after Arnot was initially denied by the crossbar.
