ROBBIE Ure believes that there is a ‘togetherness’ in the Rangers U19 squad as they gear-up for their first match in the UEFA Youth League against Ajax at the De Toekomst on Wednesday afternoon.
The young Gers will travel to Amsterdam tomorrow where they will face Freank Peereboom’s squad in their first group stage fixture of this year’s youth European campaign.
Speaking exclusively to RangersTV ahead of the much-anticipated match, he said: "We can’t wait! It’s really exciting to play against the best young players in the world, Ajax are obviously going to be a very good team, but we feel as though we’re a really good team as well – we’re excited for the challenge and hopefully we can do well.
"I think in pre-season we played teams similar to Ajax with their style of play, but we’re a well-prepared team and I feel that we have a togetherness in the squad that are set out for these types of games.
"I feel like in any game of football you need to have confidence and go and do well – that’s no different for these types of games."
The Light Blue was a key player in McCallum’s squad during last season's Youth League run and he firmly believes that previous experience will benefit the squad as they face such high level of opposition.
He added: "I feel that I’m a slightly more experienced member of the squad, it’s important to lay that off on some of the boys who maybe haven’t played in the Youth League last season, hopefully we can go in with a mentality to go and win the game and do well, that should put us in good stead.
"We want to be playing in the first team one day and I feel mirroring them as much as possible is just as important. For instance, if you get told that you’re going round to train with them, then you’re well suited to go do so as well as you can."
It’s been an incredibly exciting period for the impressive young Ger in recent weeks after making his first team appearance against Queen of the South in the Scottish League Cup at Ibrox.
The youngster netted the opening goal for van Bronckhorst’s squad as they progressed into the next round of the campaign in a Man of the Match performance, and Robbie took time to reflect on the experience.
He continued: "I feel going round to train with them, you enjoy yourself and let the boss have a look at you, but I also feel that you just need to be yourself and not change what you do from the B team to the first team.
"I feel like I did well and it’s a dream come true to score at Ibrox for your boyhood club, I’m just enjoying myself at the moment. As I said, it was a dream come true, but now I’m back and working hard – it’s important to not get too high as well as too low in football. I’m just working and hopefully a chance like that will come again.
"If I’m honest, I was just really excited to eventually walk out at Ibrox. I knew I had experienced players alongside me, like Scott Arfield, Ryan Jack, Glen Kamara, and Steven Davis. I knew if I played okay the players behind me would make it easier for me.
"These players have played at the highest level of the game, being around them as much as possible, talking to them off the pitch is really important for me."
