Russell Martin: Win And Keep Improving

RUSSELL MARTIN says his Rangers squad are ready for their Premiership curtain raiser.

The Gers kick-off their 2025/26 league campaign with a short trip to Fir Park tomorrow night just days after getting past Panathinaikos in the UEFA Champions League second qualifying round.

Martin is looking forward to seeing what his new-look side, who will still be without Thelo Aasgaard and Hamza Igamane, can bring and hopes it starts with a victory.

Speaking to the media, he said: “I am looking forward to the league.

“We have had some massive games, we are five weeks in and normally we would be in pre-season, but everyone has navigated the change really well.

“There has been so much change at the top and a lot of leadership roles changed, players, style of play. Change can be messy, but the way they have navigated it has made me so proud.

“The players have to learn quickly and Wednesday night will help us grow, psychologically, tactically but they showed a lot of character.

“It isn’t always easy, but hopefully the way we play it goes our way more often than not, but when it doesn’t you have to stick together, you have to fight and run and the players are doing that.

“This club demands that every game and we want to start as well as we can.

“If and when we have disappointment, and hopefully it isn’t tomorrow, how we respond will dictate what we do, not losing one game.

“We are going to try to win and build on what we did and play better than we did on Wednesday and the rest will take care of itself.

“Thelo and Hamza are not available but they aren’t far away. They are not serious but they are frustrating and we have to be patient so we don’t re-injure them.”

Martin will come up against former Norwich team-mate Jens Berthel Askou, after he took over the Steelmen earlier this summer.

The Light Blues Head Coach is looking forward to a catch up, but hopes it is after picking up all three points.

He added: “Jens is a good person, he is professional and very diligent.

“I bumped into him in Bologna when we were doing our Pro Licence a few years ago and we have stayed in touch since then.

“We have sent a few messages but I haven’t seen him, but I know how hard working he was and how serious he takes his job and I am sure he has carried that on.

“It will be good to see him but I want to win the game and it is better to catch up after a win.”

Winger Mikey Moore has been added to the squad this week and Martin believes more work will be done before the transfer window closes early next month.

He said: “Mikey is a brilliant signing and it will be good for us, good for Spurs and good for Mikey’s development. He is a super talented boy and we are delighted to have him.

“I think he can make an impact, age is irrelevant if you are good enough, you are old enough and he can help us win games.

“We don’t know when he will be available as he is deemed a minor by FIFA, but we are working hard on that, so we have to wait and see when that comes.

“We need to strengthen a few key areas, Mikey helps as he gives us another option and real flexibility in the top line.

“There will be players leaving and others joining and I think we have to be willing and open for that change.”
