Steven Davis: Winning Is What Matters

INTERIM manager Steven Davis knows winning is what matters at Rangers as he steps up to take charge of the squad.

The Northern Irishman says he has confidence in the group of players at the club as he looks to instil ‘pride and belief’ ahead of an important two fixtures this week.

In an exclusive first interview with RangersTV since taking on the role, Davis said: “I like to play football in a certain way, but ultimately you must get results and that is first and foremost at a club like Rangers - that is what the expectation is.

“I just want to try and get some pride back in terms of how we play and try to get the boys' confidence back as well. I think we have got a really good group here and I see the level of application they show every day. I have been in and around it long enough with the majority of them, so I just want to put that belief back in the team and give them a platform to show their best performance.

“I know exactly what everybody is capable of, the quality that they have got, and what their strengths are so hopefully I can settle the team along with the staff in a way that will let them flourish.”

In his new role, Davis will be supported by Alex Rae, Steven Smith, Brian Gilmour, and Colin Stewart and believes their experience will be vital as he takes his first step into management.

Preparations have already started for Thursday evening’s UEFA Europa League group stage match away to Aris Limassol and Davis says it will a joint effort in the coming weeks.

He continued: “It is going to be vital, this is ultimately all relatively new to me. As much experience as I have playing it is a different viewpoint now and I will be relying heavily on the likes of Alex, Steven, Colin and Brian but I think it is going to be a joint effort from all the staff.

“Everybody wants the club to be performing well and be in a better place. The fans will be behind us as well, they are travelling in their numbers again on Thursday, it is a game we are looking forward to and hopefully we will be prepared and ready to go.

“We have got good staff here, the analysts have got a lot of details on the opposition so we spent some time this morning already going through that with them and trying to get things together that will help the team. There is a lot of work to do but we have got enough time between now and kick-off to be well prepared.

“I have good relationships with everybody, I have got respect for every player in that dressing room, I have got belief in them as well and it is important to try and give them the tools to go and perform to the best of their ability and I believe we can go on and start building something here.”
