Tavernier Thrilled With Team Performance

THRILLED James Tavernier moved onto 12 league goals for the season tonight after netting a double in the 8-0 defeat of Hamilton Accies.

The Light Blues skipper was once again outstanding for his side as they recorded their biggest top-flight win since 1967 to make it six wins on the bounce in the Scottish Premiership.

Named ‘Man of the Match’, he told RangersTV: "We are delighted with the performance today coming off what was a disappointing European game.

"But I think the boys reacted tremendously today. We knew we had to leave it all out on the pitch, be relentless in everything we do throughout the full 90 minutes, and it just showed coming in at half-time at 4-0, we wanted to keep going, we wanted to keep the clean sheet and get everyone numbers as it was a game to rack up the numbers, so I am really proud of the team.

"We know we have to do this when we come off the back of European games. We know these games are massive, and every game is a cup final for us.

"We know we have to keep getting three points on the board, so it was important to go into the international break to leave three points on the board.

"I think it has been coming - we know Hamilton are an organised team, but our intensity really pushed them at the start of the game and I am really happy we were able to contribute that many goals."

Gers were able to name a superbly strong XI and bench today, and brought on Calvin Bassey and a debut for Bongani Zungu.

Tavernier continued: "It's praise to the gaffer, the management team and the club with how they have dealt with the transfer window, the improvement of the squad and the depth of the squad and how strong it is.

"You can see today boys in the starting XI getting a chance, and even at half time, [Bongani] Zungu and Calvin [Bassey] came on, Brandon came on and got a goal, so it is tremendous that we have got great strength in our squad that we can rely on everyone in the team."

Leading 4-0 at half-time, Tavernier revealed the message from the manager in the dressing room, saying: "It was to go out as if it was 0-0 and play the same - don't take the foot off the gas and keep doing the right things.

"We have had times where we have come in at half-time leading and we have made the second half harder for ourselves, and we didn't want to do that.

"So it is about good habits and today I am really proud of the boys that we were relentless throughout the 90 minutes."
