Watling Delighted With The Quality of Goals

DEVELOPMENT Coach Harry Watling has been delighted with the quality of goals scored by Rangers in his time at the club so far and reckons they are assisting with the overall creation of their style of play.

Watling, who arrived alongside boss Michael Beale at the end of November, has been pleased with the results so far, but he insists he and the coaching staff are still on the lookout for the ‘perfect game’.

Speaking to RangersTV, he said: “You have seen both sides of the game. I think you have seen real good steel from the group in terms of not allowing the opposition to create chances against us.

“We want the perfect game, because we haven’t got that yet, but what that does do, it seduces you to come back to work the next day and work at it and just try to get more moments like that in a game.”

The Englishman has hailed the side for adapting their game in a week that has seen Rangers win three times in three different competitions on three very different playing.

He continued: “As much as we could talk about the surfaces, I think we should talk more about the mentality of the players to just rise to playing on those surfaces and raise their technical level and mentality.

“The semi-final was a difficult surface, but I thought we played some great stuff, then you go and play on astroturf which is another challenge.

“The pitch on Saturday [at St Johnstone] wasn’t the best but again we are not looking for excuses, we are just looking for results.”

The first team development coach has been satisfied with the overall progression he has seen from the side during his time with the Light Blues so far and feels a full week of training will benefit the club before they return to league action this weekend.

He said: “It has been a solid start; the players have really bought into what the manager wants and what the coaching staff are trying to implement for him.

“If you look at the goals that we have scored then that will reflect the work that is being done but Rome wasn’t built in a day, so we need to work harder to get to where we want.

“The way we want to play is about relationships on the pitch so the more time the boys spend together I think that will help create and develop those relationships on the pitch, so the more time we can get together the better.”
