RANGERS are proud to hold our annual Remembrance Day event at Ibrox today, commemorating those who gave their lives for their country.
There will be a minute’s silence before kick-off and the players will show their respect by wearing special commemorative poppy shirts.
Rangers Football Club is honoured to welcome a number of Armed Forces veterans to the Stadium for today’s match, as well as representatives from Poppyscotland and each branch of the services.
Earlier today, representatives of the Club, Poppyscotland and the Rangers Charity Foundation took part in a wreath laying ceremony at the John Greig statue alongside representatives from the Royal Navy, Army and the RAF.
The Rangers Charity Foundation is hosting a can collection at Ibrox today for Poppyscotland, who have been supporting servicemen and women, and veterans, and their families since 1921 with issues linked to their time in the Armed Forces or with struggles adjusting from military to civilian life.
We are also proud to welcome a number of veterans associated with Ipswich Town FC who have been accompanied by former Rangers Captain, and Ipswich Town Captain, Terry Butcher, to the match today as part of a Medals2Matches (M2M) initiative.
One of Terry’s sons, Christopher, served in the Royal Artillery in Afghanistan and sadly passed away aged 35. M2M and supporting our armed forces personnel, veterans, and their families, is a cause very close to Terry’s heart and we are delighted to be able to welcome him back to Ibrox for today’s match and commemoration of Remembrance.
M2M was an idea originally proposed by Nigel Seaman to Ipswich Town FC and encourages all serving personnel and veterans to wear their medals with pride at matches where Remembrance is observed – an initiative that we are also promoting here at Ibrox today as we honour their service.
Please support our Armed Forces community, past and present, by wearing a poppy and donating to the Scottish Poppy Appeal. By doing so, you will be helping Poppyscotland provide life-changing support for the Armed Forces community in Scotland, including funding services in relation to advice, employment, housing, mental health and mobility.
The club and Foundation have helped to raise over £140,000 for Poppyscotland over the last six years, thanks to Remembrance Day can collections, the auction of embroidered Remembrance Day match-worn shirts, the sale of Poppyscotland’s dual branded Rangers badges and the Foundation’s fundraising for Poppyscotland as part of its Armed Forces Fund.
Poppyscotland is also one of the beneficiaries of the Rangers Charity Foundation’s Armed Forces Fund this season.
Richard Todd, National Poppy Appeal Manager for Scotland, said: “The Scottish Poppy Appeal depends on the generosity of the public and the ongoing support of Rangers Football Club and the Rangers Charity Foundation.
“Every donation helps us provide life-changing support to members of the Armed Forces community and their families by offering mental health and financial assistance, as well as other vital welfare services that make a real difference to those who have given so much for us all.
“Please donate to this year’s Scottish Poppy Appeal and wear your Poppy with pride. On behalf of Poppyscotland, thank you to Rangers FC, the Rangers Charity Foundation, and the club’s fans for your ongoing support.”
Immediately prior to kick-off today there will be a minute’s silence to mark the passing of all those brave men and women who have lost their life defending our country. We would ask all supporters to stand, if they are able to do so, to honour our fallen.
A veteran who participates in one of the Rangers Charity Foundation’s community programmes and a veteran representing the M2M initiative at Ipswich Town FC will lead out the teams along with two sailors, two soldiers and two airmen.
We also have distinguished guests in the Director’s Box this afternoon, including the Royal Navy’s Commander Gary Farmer, Major Alan Falconer from the Army, Corporal Grant Gamble from the RAF and Damian Doran-Timson from Poppyscotland.
