Dan Neil: We Showed Our Character

DAN NEIL believes Rangers showed their character in the 1-0 win over Aberdeen at Pittodrie.

Skipper Lawrence Shankland’s second-half penalty proved the difference as Derek McInnes’ men picked up all three points on the road.

The Light Blues picked themselves from the UEFA Conference League defeat to FK Jablonec on Thursday and Neil praised the squad for putting that disappointment behind them quickly.

Speaking to RangersTV, he said: "We are delighted. It wasn’t the prettiest performance, there were some good bits but the main thing is the togetherness.

“That comes from the disappointment of the last few weeks, we spent a few days together after Thursday and we said there is a lot to play for this year.

“We showed that togetherness and the will to fight for each other and come away from a tough place with three points.

“On Thursday, we were desperate to come through that tie but it didn’t happen that way, but the fact we had a game so close, such a big game as well, we knew we had to put Thursday behind us, get the three points and you saw a real fight from the team and people standing up to be counted.

“We were delighted to come away with the points.”

Neil played alongside Cammy Devlin in the middle of the park and while he knows the squad can play better, he thinks there is enough to build on ahead of Wednesday’s trip to Falkirk.

He added: “I really enjoyed it, sometimes these are the fun ones and it is nice to play pretty football and the exciting football, but sometimes you have to battle away.

“We had each other's back and to come away with the three points there is no better feeling.

“It is important we build on this, we have probably lacked clean sheets this season. We have our first in the league and we have to look at what we did well, but we have to look to what we can improve on.

“I think this squad, the quality we have, we can play better but you have seen an example that we are willing to fight.”
