RANGERS Football Club are today delighted to announce midfielder Steven Davis has signed a one-year extension to his contract.
Northern Ireland captain Davis - who could overtake Peter Shilton’s all-time UK international caps record in the next fortnight - has committed his future to the summer of 2022, meaning he will have given almost eight years of service to the club across two spells by the time his new deal expires.
Davis has been in outstanding form for Steven Gerrard’s side this season, and is sure to be among the candidates for ‘Player of the Year’ come the end of the campaign.
His role in delivering 55 will never be forgotten by supporters – and now he has signed up for the next chapter in Rangers’ history with the Light Blues looking to make a return to the Champions League next season.
Rangers Manager, Steven Gerrard outlined his delight at securing the Northern Ireland captain for another season, explaining “Steven embodies professionalism and continues to set the standards required to be a Rangers player. He has been instrumental this year, playing a key role in our league success.
“Ross and I have enjoyed open dialogue with him, and acknowledge how he has handled this contact extension. Steven is low-maintenance and has much more to give our team, not only for the rest of this season but beyond.
“He is a role model to his team mates and continues to strive to be a better version of himself. I am very pleased to have a player with Premier League and international experience on board as we look towards next season.”
Speaking after putting pen-to-paper, a delighted Davis commented: “It is a privilege to play at Rangers and very game for my boyhood club is special.
"Winning 55 was a historic moment for all of us and especially for me, as I had always said that I had unfinished business at Ibrox. As the Manager has said, this is only the beginning and I am proud to continue as a Ranger for another season.
“We have plenty left to fight for this season and I am pleased that I have been able to contribute to the team. The manager and Ross were very open about their plans for me and the squad in the year ahead. I am excited for the future and especially to hear the Champions League music at Ibrox once again.”
Sporting Director, Ross Wilson commented “It has been a pleasure to spend the best part of the last six seasons with Steven Davis both here at Rangers and at Southampton.
"We all know his qualities on the pitch but from working with him every day over the years, I see an outstanding professional going about his business, setting an excellent example to others.
“He would be the first to say that he’s surrounded by good people - his family, his friends and his representation. I’ve known Rob Segal for a long time and we concluded contract discussions very quickly.
“Steven loves being a Rangers player and he knows how much we all enjoy his continued influence at our club.”
