Alex McLeish RYDC Exclusive

RYDC hosted a Twitter Q&A with former Rangers manager Alex McLeish last week and we’ll feature some of the content from his session in the coming days.

The ex-Light Blues boss, who won seven trophies in five years at Ibrox, was delighted to answer questions from supporters and covered a variety of topics - including his reflections on the cup double achieved in his debut campaign, the Treble in 2002/03 plus Helicopter Sunday in 2005.

We kick off today with what Alex considers to be his best signing.

There were a number of candidates from the capture of French defender Jean-Alain Boumsong to the return of skipper Barry Ferguson from Blackburn Rovers.

But one name shines above all – Croatian striker Dado Prso who joined on a free transfer after leaving Monaco.

He played like a warrior throughout the successful 2004/05 league cup and league title winning campaign and became a huge favourite with supporters and team-mates.

Alex raved: “We had a few good signings. Bringing Barry Ferguson back to Rangers for example but the best value was Dado Prso. He was incredible. He stood out like a beacon.

“He expressed his love for playing at Ibrox with Monaco before he joined. He was incredible. What an impact he made. It was just what we needed after a really tough season after we had won the treble.

“The glory he helped bring to the club was exceptional.

“Dado was awesome, just awesome and I’ve kept in touch with him over the years. He is just a wonderful human being.

“He had so much passion, and probably still does, but he just had a love for the club. He kept saying ‘what a stadium, what an atmosphere’ and he enjoyed the battles with Celtic as well.

“When we went up to Aberdeen and won during the Helicopter Sunday year, big Dado played in the Pittodrie wind and rain like an absolute trojan.

“He gave their defence water in the head on that particular day. All the guys would run through brick walls for us but Dado was just infectious. He was so liked by all the players, he was just so popular. A great character and the players loved him.

“Of course when I went in I inherited some fantastic players. Arthur Numan who had played in the semi-final of a World Cup, Ronald de Boer and Barry Ferguson – who was a fantastic player and could play in any stadium in the world.

“But I have to turn to that character Dado Prso. All the players under my charge will say ‘wait a minute, I ran through a brick wall for Rangers as well’ but Dado was so loved by all the players.

“He sang a rock song when he was introduced to everybody for his initiation – I think it was Bon Jovi – and Dado battered out a song and the players absolutely loved him from day one.

“So my best signing was Dado Prso without question.”
