At Ibrox, the club were humbled to welcome survivors and family members of those affected by events for a private memorial service, while a public service at the Disasters memorial statue was very well-attended by supporters.
Later, club ambassador John Brown represented Rangers at a service in Fife to remember the five Markinch boys who passed away before the club were also represented at a supporter-led memorial at Ibrox in the early evening.
Rangers CEO, Fraser Thornton, commented: “On behalf of Rangers Football Club, I would like to pass on my thanks to all those who contributed to or attended events on January 2 to ensure those affected by tragedies at Ibrox are always remembered.
“January 2 is the most important day in the Rangers calendar, The club will constantly review how we mark the day, how those affected are memorialised at the stadium, and how supporters can pay tribute to those whom we lost.”
The events of this year have been delivered as a result of the creation and early work of a newly consituted Heritage Working Group, which has the initial remit of reviewing and engaging in discussions on how the club most appropriately remembers and memorialises the Ibrox disasters.
This group has representation from key club staff, the Former Players Benvolet Club, supporter groups, as well as representation from survivors and families of those affected by the Ibrox disasters and we are thankful for the engagement and honest discussion of all working group members in delivering this years events.
This work sits alongside the club’s wider supporter engagement activity, including ongoing dialogue with fans on matters such as ticketing, MyGers and European away travel, and reflects a continued commitment to listening and collaboration across the club.
While many family members and survivors are now in contact with the club, we are aware some have not yet been, or perhaps don’t know how to contact the club.
