RANGERS Chairman Andrew Cavenagh says the history and depth of passion attracted the consortium, led by the American businessman and 49ers Enterprises, to purchase a majority stake in the club.
Following yesterday’s EGM, Cavenagh sat down for a first interview with RangersTV to discuss what attracted him to the club, and his vision for the future.
He said: “There are many things that attracted us, but I think I keep coming back to three. The first are the supporters themselves. The breadth of the fanbase is incredible.
“There are millions of supporters around the world, over 600 supporters’ clubs and we sold over 400,000 kits in a year recently. It is not just the breath but also the depth of the passion.
“The second is Ibrox, it is our castle. It is an incredibly tough place to come and play as an opposing team which gives us a competitive advantage, and it is a magical place to come as a supporter.
“The third thing that attracted us are the competitions, every year we have the chance to win the league, to win two cups and to play in Europe. I think most clubs would be thrilled to have any one of those, and at Rangers we get all three.”
On his role as Chairman, alongside Vice Chairman Paraag Marathe, Cavenagh continued: “Paraag and I are very much partners in this, but we have been very careful not to put bright lines between the roles.
“There will be an overlap, I’ll obviously gravitate towards things that I know which are going to be more on the business side and Paraag has a wealth of experience on the sporting side.
“The day to day running of the club is done by Patrick and the executive team, overseen by the board. Patrick runs the club day to day, but we help and offer advice and counsel and discuss things, but the club very much has its own team that runs it day to day.”
When asked about the history of the club, and plans for moving forward. He continued: “It is incredibly important. One of the things that attracted us to the club is the heritage and the history so our role will be to make sure we maintain and celebrate that while still moving forward to achieve our ambitions.
"This club needs a catalyst and Paraag and I are prepared to lead the effort to be a catalyst, so we are thrilled to be part of the club.”
