In an intense few days for the team with tough tests against both Milan clubs, off the back of facing Middlesbrough to kick off their games programme last Sunday, the Gers will look to use the outings as a learning curve for the start of the competitive season in two weeks’ time.
Speaking to RangersTV to look back on the time away, he said: “It has been a brilliant week, it has been challenging for the players and the staff.
“We have faced some tough games, but it will put us in good stead for the upcoming season.
“We played against two really good teams that have challenged us physically, mentally and tactically, and then the players responded well. It will put us in a position where we'll be ready to go in a few weeks’ time.
“It puts us in a position to learn from that and improve as a team and as individuals. Then, we can reflect on that and use it to become better; that is the main thing.
“I thought there were loads of good things in both games.
"The standards that we set were a wee bit disappointing as a squad in terms of some of the goals that we gave away, even though we are playing against better teams, we can do better, and that will be something that we focus on.
“In terms of possession, I thought we did really well in both games. However, that final bit of detail that you need against the better teams to create the chances and score them is something that we may have lacked, but it will definitely help us as a team moving forward.”
In a demanding week of games, the assistant coach spoke of the benefits it will have on the players for what lies ahead, with the team getting the chance to integrate two new signings as well as several young players into the squad.
He continued: “It is very demanding, but when we get to the major part of the season in the league, it will be the split when you are playing against the good teams maybe once or twice a week.
“It is a good thing to do at the start of the season, and you have not got much rest time, and you're then maybe feeling a wee bit low because there were tough moments.
“How you recover from those moments both on and off the pitch is why it is really beneficial for everybody to know that once it is done and you have reflected on it, it's how you use the learnings for the next game. They did that well, I thought.
“For moments they done well, but if we reflect, it is just on the mistakes that are costing us.
“The young players as well were really challenged, and for them it is just that learning curve of less time on the ball.
“Less time and less space, and how you can then create that space and time to become better players.
“Individually, people got stretched, and as a team, it was difficult. It was brilliant to see them, and I think the thing that I really liked was how they responded in the tough moments, because we'll have tough moments as the season goes on.
The Light Blues have had a period of certainty over the summer, with both Thomson and Craig McPherson taking the lead with no head coach in place. As he summed up the last few weeks since their return, it's now what’s to come to round off their pre-season programme, and look ahead to the SWPL recommencing.
He added: “It has been pretty seamless for us, in all honesty, and Hagi [Craig McPherson] won’t like me saying this, but he is excellent.
“He has been really good with leadership skills, and he has involved everybody in the decision-making and then led on it.
“The players have been first class, responded really well.
“It is always tough when you have not got a head coach in place and you are unsure what is happening, but their attitude and effort have been brilliant and the coaching staff have been really appreciative of it.
“It has been business as normal for us; we have just been taking the sessions, and the players have responded really well and are in a really good position for moving forward. I see us having a strong start to the season based on what I have seen over the last weeks.
“Preparations started after the AC Milan game; you analyse that and reflect, use the learnings from that and then we get that over and done with, then we focus on Sunderland and we get ready for the game on Wednesday.
“The major thing is the players came out of the games and the pre-season without injuries and are hopefully ready to go for the Montrose game. From what I see at the moment, that is moving in the right direction, and we'll be strong and sharp for the first game of the season.”
