With his side two goals up after a remarkable first half, the big centre-half rose highest in the box and powered a fantastic header into the net with 51 minutes on the clock.
It was a moment the Nigerian international savoured as he celebrated with the club's supporters - and it was a goal that could prove so crucial prior to next week's second leg in Belgrade.
Leon, speaking post-match, said: "It's amazing. To score in front of our own fans in this fantastic stadium is for me personally historical. I think it was an important goal as well so I'm really happy about that.
"Red Star were never really out of the game. I think we were struggling at times in the first half but after going 2-0 up at half-time we said that we had to reset and that the game is far from done.
"We've been in positions like that before so it was about trying to get another goal and to get the best possible result for next week. I'm happy we got that done.
"I think the penalty [save from Allan McGregor] was a really big moment for us and it got everybody to waken up, because I don't think we were as good as were in the second half. But the crowd has again been amazing today and I think it was a really strong team performance over the full 90 minutes.
"It sets us up for next week but we need to park that for a little bit because there is a very important cup fixture at the weekend coming up and we want to make sure we get past that as well."
