Barry Ferguson Pleased With Effort and Commitment Shown

BARRY Ferguson says his side gave him the effort and commitment he was looking for in this afternoon’s Old Firm derby draw at Ibrox.

The head coach praised the work rate of his team, but felt they could’ve been more clinical in attack, insisting it’s something they’ll work on moving forward.

Cyriel Dessers gave Rangers the lead late in the first-half, before Adam Idah found a response for Celtic to see the last derby of the Scottish Premiership season end level.

Speaking to RangersTV at full time, Ferguson said: “I am disappointed just to take a point, if you look at the game overall, we definitely deserved to get the three points.

“I just spoke to the boys in there, in terms of effort and commitment, that is what I expect from my team. We just needed that bit of quality when we were breaking, just in that final pass or final attempt on goal and it is something we need to sharpen up on.

“I asked them for a full-blooded committed performance, and they certainly gave me that. I think when you look at the game we should score another couple of goals, so it is a good thing to be disappointed. That is what I want them to be.

“I am just demanding, and they know that. I know we can get better, but it is a case of us going and working harder on the training ground and we will. I thought at times we broke really well, we broke at pace it is just that final bit let us down, but the guys totally agree.

“They understand and it is something we will work towards this week when we come back into training.”

Leon Balogun hit the crossbar in the opening minute, before Nico Raskin saw a goal disallowed for offside as Ferguson’s men looked to capitalise on a strong first-half. It was Dessers who found the target with his 25th goal of the season and Ferguson was pleased to see the team moved finished off by the striker.

He continued: “When you miss a couple of chances, it becomes easy to feel sorry for yourself, but I kept on and they kept going and going.

“I thought our goal was excellent, it was really good play and that is something we work on quite a lot, so it was pleasing to see that go in.

“We knew Celtic were going to be disappointed, and that they were going to come out which they did. I thought we stood strong, and we countered really well on them. It is just that final pass maybe can be better so that is something that we certainly need to work on.”
